The catch? Asencio’s own stance.

Despite being informed he can go, the defender is still determined to fight for his place in Madrid. That resolve has stalled any serious progress. There are no formal talks, no bid, and no agreement in sight – only a clear line of communication and a door that might yet swing open.

If the 24-year-old eventually accepts that his future lies away from the Santiago Bernabeu, Liverpool are expected to stay in the frame. Iraola, the Liverpool manager, is described as a long-time admirer, and the need for another experienced centre-back is obvious.

Defensive need behind attacking drive
