Liverpool's Pursuit of Yan Diomande: PSG Takes Control
Liverpool’s pursuit of Yan Diomande is going down to the wire – but all the noise points in one direction, and it isn’t Anfield.
The Premier League side have thrown everything at the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger, identifying him as the man to step into the cavernous space left by Mohamed Salah’s departure. Contract torn up, era over, right flank wide open. Liverpool moved quickly and aggressively.
A formal offer of €100m – around £85m – has already been knocked back by Leipzig. The structure has been debated: some sources insist it was €90m plus €10m in add-ons, others say €80m plus €20m. The detail hardly matters. The headline figure was €100m, and Leipzig said no.
More damaging for Liverpool than the rejection, though, was Diomande’s stance. Once he made it clear he wanted Paris Saint-Germain, the chase looked to be slipping away.
Liverpool didn’t simply walk away. Their ownership group, FSG, pivoted and cranked up their efforts for Bradley Barcola, sensing that Diomande’s expected arrival in Paris could squeeze the France international out of the Ligue 1 champions’ plans. Barcola, locked in a contract stalemate with PSG, suddenly looked like a live opportunity.
Even so, Diomande remained the crown jewel. And Liverpool, unwilling to give up on their primary target, came back for one last swing.
Late push, but Paris in control
TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey reports that Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all made late approaches to test Leipzig’s resolve and Diomande’s preference. Of that trio, Liverpool’s interest carries the most weight: he is their top attacking target, and they have already proven they will go to nine figures to get him.
The response has been brutal in its clarity. Diomande wants PSG.
Any suggestion that PSG had cooled on the deal has been pushed aside. Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has now taken personal charge of negotiations with Leipzig, a move that has shifted the talks up a gear. When the president steps in, it usually signals intent at the highest level.
Al-Khelaifi’s long-standing relationship with Red Bull’s hierarchy has helped cut through the usual friction. According to sources close to the talks, discussions have accelerated and an agreement is edging closer. Inside Leipzig, there is an acceptance that Diomande is on his way to Paris; the mood has moved from defiance to resignation.
PSG are understood to be ready to go to around €110m – roughly £93.5m – to close the deal. That figure would comfortably eclipse Liverpool’s rejected offer and underlines just how determined the French champions are to win this particular arms race.
Liverpool turn back to Barcola
For Liverpool, the writing is now on the wall. With Diomande’s path seemingly set towards the Parc des Princes and Leipzig braced for his exit, the Merseyside club are preparing to re-centre their summer on Barcola.
The France international finds himself at a crossroads. Talks over a new and improved contract with PSG have stalled, and there is an acceptance that he can leave for the right price. Diomande’s likely arrival only sharpens that reality.
Liverpool still need a new right-sided force to reshape their forward line in the post-Salah era. Diomande may be slipping away to Paris, but the search for the next Anfield headline act is only just beginning.
