Liverpool's Mbaye Pursuit Stalls in Forward Search

Liverpool’s need is obvious. The conviction around one of their supposed targets is not.

With less than two weeks left in the summer window, the club are still in the market for attacking reinforcements, and Ibrahim Mbaye’s name has been pushed to the front of the rumour mill. The reality, though, is far cooler than the noise around it.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool have explored a move for the 18-year-old Senegal winger, but senior figures at the club insist talks have not progressed. Claims that personal terms are already agreed have been dismissed by those inside Anfield.

Bayer Leverkusen are also credited with interest, yet for now Mbaye remains just that for Liverpool: an option, not a live deal.

Price, priorities and a tight market

Paris Saint-Germain are understood to value Mbaye at around £43 million. That figure instantly drags the conversation towards Liverpool’s broader transfer strategy in attack, especially with Bradley Barcola still their major offensive focus.

Barcola alone could cost north of £120m this summer. If that deal is completed, it leaves a tight margin for any secondary forward signing, which makes Mbaye’s price all the more significant. Finding a younger, high-ceiling attacker at a substantially lower cost than the PSG winger will not be straightforward in this market.

Inside the club, there is an acceptance that at least two forwards are required before the deadline. The ideal scenario? Three. Two wide players and a central striker to ease the burden on Alexander Isak over a long, unforgiving season.

That is the scale of the rebuild being weighed against the realities of elite-level fees.

Why Mbaye fits the profile

Strip away the uncertainty over negotiations and Mbaye still looks like a very deliberate type of target.

As Andy Jones outlines, the teenager’s game is built on acceleration, sharp turning and the ability to wriggle out of tight areas rather than engage in physical battles he is unlikely to win at this stage of his development. He drives forward with the ball, commits defenders and, crucially, tends to create chances for others rather than hunting shots for himself.

That matters for Liverpool’s attacking balance. If the plan is to push the goal-scoring responsibility towards the central forward, the wide players have to become facilitators. They must stretch the pitch, break lines and feed the No. 9 relentlessly.

On paper, Mbaye fits that brief. A right-sided winger, 18, raw but with a high ceiling and a style that leans towards creativity from the flank rather than individual finishing glory.

The price? Yes, it is heavy for a teenager. But in a market where potential is routinely tagged at £40m-£50m, Liverpool will be asking whether it is better to pay that premium now and develop him themselves than watch his value double elsewhere.

Decision time

For the moment, though, this is theory, not action. Liverpool’s interest is real but not advanced. PSG’s valuation is clear. The Barcola pursuit hangs over everything.

Once the Frenchman’s situation is resolved, the picture around Mbaye – and the rest of Liverpool’s forward shortlist – should sharpen quickly.
