Liverpool's Interest in Lamine Camara: A Midfield Solution?
Liverpool’s summer business is not finished yet. Behind the noise of a blockbuster move for Bradley Barcola, the club are still probing the market for a midfielder – and eyes are turning towards Monaco’s Lamine Camara.
A reputable source on X (formerly Twitter) has linked the Reds with the 22-year-old, describing Liverpool as firm admirers of the Senegal international. The interest comes at a time when the club are close to sealing a £120m package deal for Barcola from PSG, a move that would dramatically reshape the forward line.
But at Anfield, the debate is growing: is a midfielder just as urgent?
Midfield balance still under scrutiny
Liverpool’s title-winning midfield of 2024/25 carried plenty of flair. Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch drove the team forward, broke lines, and piled into the final third. They also left scars.
The 2-2 draw with Newcastle at the weekend underlined the issue. When attacks broke down, Liverpool often looked stretched and vulnerable through the middle, with space appearing in front of the back line and second balls going unclaimed.
That is why the recruitment team have not closed the door on one more midfield addition. The challenge is obvious: strengthen the core of the team without stripping Andoni Iraola of attacking depth in a season where Liverpool expect to fight on multiple fronts.

If Liverpool decide to move for a midfielder with natural defensive instincts, Camara fits the profile.
His Ligue 1 numbers from the 2025/26 season are eye-catching. Per 90 minutes, he wins 6.56 duels, placing him in the 92nd percentile, and comes out on top in 56% of them (78th percentile). He averages 5.69 defensive contributions (73rd percentile) and 7.68 recoveries (93rd percentile), underlining his work rate and reading of the game. He also wins possession 1.02 times per 90 in the final third, ranking in the 95th percentile – the kind of aggressive counter-pressing trait Liverpool have long prized.
The appeal doesn’t stop when he gets the ball. Camara posts 0.21 expected assists per 90 (93rd percentile) and creates 1.7 chances per game (89th percentile). He produces 0.39 big chances per 90 (91st percentile) and averages 82.71 touches (92nd percentile), numbers that point to a midfielder comfortable dictating play rather than just breaking it up.
He doesn’t look like a pure destroyer. He looks like a modern all-phase midfielder.
For a Liverpool side trying to restore defensive stability without dulling their attacking edge, that blend is exactly what makes Camara an intriguing option.
The price of protection
Intrigue, though, comes at a cost. Monaco have already turned down a £35m offer from Crystal Palace, as reported by the BBC. Other reports suggest the French club value Camara between £42.8m and £51.4m.
Those figures sit in the territory where Liverpool traditionally want clear, first-team-impact signings. With a nine-figure outlay on Barcola looming, every extra pound spent on midfield cover would need to be justified by minutes and influence, not just potential.
So the question lingers inside the recruitment meetings at Kirkby: do Liverpool commit serious funds to a midfielder like Camara now, or trust Szoboszlai, Gravenberch and the current options to carry the load while Barcola and the forwards take centre stage?
One more signing could tilt the balance of the squad. The next few weeks will show whether Liverpool see that final piece in the heart of midfield – or on the wing.
