Liverpool Eye Bradley Barcola Transfer Amid PSG's High Valuation

Liverpool have opened the door to one of the most ambitious moves of the summer, holding preliminary talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola – but the numbers on the table are miles apart.

PSG, Champions League holders and in no rush to sell, value the 23-year-old at a staggering £145m. Liverpool, while admirers of the France international, are nowhere near that figure. At this stage, the fee alone makes the deal a difficult one to drag over the line.

Yet the conversation has started. And that matters.

A winger plan shaped by Salah’s exit

This is Andoni Iraola’s first window on Merseyside and he has made his priorities brutally clear: fix the flanks. Mohamed Salah has gone, and with him a decade-defining source of goals, gravity and personality. Iraola’s football lives on wide men – pace, aggression, relentless running – and Liverpool’s recruitment drive reflects that.

The club have not only spoken to PSG. They have also held early talks with Barcola’s representatives, sounding out what a move to Anfield might look like. The player, for his part, is understood to be attracted by the idea of joining Liverpool.

Barcola has two years left on his PSG deal and has made it known he will not be signing an extension, frustrated by limited game time in Paris. That stance gives Liverpool a sliver of leverage, but only if PSG soften their valuation. They paid around £40m to Lyon in the summer of 2023; the French champions now want more than triple that outlay.

Liverpool’s plan is broader than one blockbuster signing. The club intend to finish the window with five wingers, one of them a younger project player to develop alongside more established options. That is where another PSG talent enters the frame.

Mbaye interest runs on a separate track

While Barcola sits at the top end of the market, Liverpool have also explored a deal for 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye. The teenager, who mainly operates from the right, is believed to be keen on a move to Anfield.

Crucially, Liverpool’s interest in Mbaye is entirely independent of any potential Barcola transfer. This is not an either-or scenario. It is possible Iraola ends the window with Mbaye and another more experienced winger, reshaping his wide options in one sweep.

For a coach whose Bournemouth and Rayo Vallecano sides were built on ferocious work-rate and speed out wide, that kind of overhaul is not a luxury. It is the foundation of his Liverpool project.

Barcola’s pedigree, PSG’s problem

Barcola’s profile explains why Liverpool are pushing at what currently looks like a locked door. In the last two years he has collected nine major trophies, including two Champions League titles. That haul underlines the level of player Liverpool are trying to bring into a post-Salah attack.

He offers the kind of versatility and high-level experience that can instantly change a frontline. For Iraola, he looks like a key piece of the jigsaw.

The issue is Paris. PSG’s stance is firm: they would ideally like to keep him. They have already moved on three forwards this summer – Goncalo Ramos, Randal Kolo Muani and Kang-In Lee – and have no intention of being forced into losing another attacking option on the cheap.

The French champions have been busy in the market themselves. They have signed Magnes Akliouche from Monaco in a £42.8m deal, a move that briefly flickered Liverpool’s way. The Premier League club had tracked the France international, but once PSG arrived, Akliouche – who grew up in the Paris region – only wanted one destination.

PSG are also in advanced talks with Ajax for winger Mika Godts. On the surface, two new wide forwards might suggest room for an exit. Inside the club, the message is different. Akliouche and Godts are not seen as replacements for Barcola. They are additions, not cover for an impending departure.

So Liverpool wait, and watch the price.

Arsenal lurking in the background

Liverpool are not alone in the chase. Arsenal, still smarting after missing out on Vinicius Junior when he extended his contract at Real Madrid, also hold an interest in Barcola. Their presence adds another layer of pressure to any negotiation, particularly if PSG eventually decide to cash in on a player unwilling to renew.

For now, the numbers do not work. PSG’s valuation belongs to a world where they control every variable. Liverpool’s interest belongs to a market that punishes clubs who cling too tightly to assets running down their contracts.
