Liverpool Midfield Reshuffle: Bajcetic's Potential Return and Ramsay's Loan Exit

Liverpool’s midfield reshuffle is edging towards a decisive moment, with Stefan Bajcetic potentially heading back to where it all began – and another once-bright hope effectively seeing his Anfield story close with a fifth loan move.

Bajcetic on brink of Celta return – if Liverpool blink

Liverpool plucked Bajcetic from Celta Vigo’s academy in December 2020, paying just £224,000 to bring the then-16-year-old to Merseyside. For a while, it looked a steal.

Under Jurgen Klopp in 2022/23, the Spain Under-21 international forced his way into the picture, making 19 appearances and earning a new long-term contract. He looked like part of Liverpool’s next midfield era, not a footnote.

Then the injuries arrived. Not one big blow, but a drip-feed of niggles that stalled his momentum and eventually pushed him out of the frame. Since May 2024, he has not played a single minute for Liverpool.

The club sent him out to find rhythm and resilience: first to Red Bull Salzburg, then to Las Palmas in the 2024/25 season. The loans kept him active, but not closer to the Liverpool XI.

Now comes the turning point. According to Faro de Vigo, Bajcetic has become a leading target for Celta Vigo, who are pushing to bring him back six years after he left Galicia for Anfield. The paper describes him as “closer than ever to returning home” and makes it clear: Celta want him back.

There is, though, one major condition. Celta need Liverpool to terminate the final year of his contract to make the move happen. No sizeable fee, no drawn-out auction – just a clean break.

Liverpool are thought to be weighing it up. They know a big transfer fee is unlikely at this stage, and a compromise is on the table: cut him loose now, but protect their interests with a sell-on clause. If Bajcetic rebuilds his career and moves on again for serious money, Liverpool still get a slice.

For a player once seen as a long-term piece of the Anfield puzzle, it would be a stark shift. For Bajcetic, it could be the reset he needs.

Ramsay’s fifth loan spells the end

On the opposite flank of Liverpool’s squad, another young talent has already reached that point of no return.

Calvin Ramsay, signed from Aberdeen in June 2022 for £4.2m, arrived with a clear brief: push Trent Alexander-Arnold, offer cover, and grow into a Liverpool right-back of the future. It never happened.

In two years, Ramsay has managed just four appearances for the club. Injuries, adaptation, and the sheer level required at Liverpool combined to leave him on the fringes almost from the start.

Loan spells followed – Preston, Bolton, Wigan, and last season Kilmarnock – but the game time never truly exploded. Across those four moves, he has played only 26 times, with the most stable run coming at Wigan, where he featured 12 times in the 2024/25 campaign.

Now Andoni Iraola, tasked with trimming and sharpening this Liverpool squad, has sanctioned another exit. Liverpool have confirmed that Ramsay, now 21, has joined St Mirren on a season-long loan.

On paper, it is just another temporary move. In reality, it looks like a farewell. Ramsay is in the final year of his Liverpool contract, and this loan all but signals the end of his Anfield career.

St Mirren have not included an option to buy, but that stance can change quickly if the full-back finally finds form and fitness in Paisley. For Ramsay, it is a lifeline – a chance to revive a career that once promised so much when he left Aberdeen.

For Liverpool, it is another clear sign of a new era taking shape: one in which sentiment is pushed aside, contracts are cut, and only those who can drive the next phase survive the cull.
