Liam Delap's Future: Premier League vs Champions League
Chelsea’s clear-out shows no sign of slowing, and now Liam Delap is at the centre of the next tug of war.
According to talkSPORT, Cesc Fabregas wants the 23-year-old to spearhead his attack at Como, adding another name to the list raided from west London. Delap has been pushed towards the exit at Stamford Bridge after a bruising first campaign in which goals dried up and fitness problems piled up.
Chelsea’s stance is blunt: they are ready to sell, but only on their terms. The price is set at £40m, a figure that would bank a £10m profit and hand the club some much-needed breathing space as they scramble to trim an oversized squad before the September deadline.
The player, though, has his own priorities.
Premier League pull vs Champions League lure
Como can dangle Champions League football and the chance to become the focal point of Fabregas’ project. For most 23-year-olds, that would be a dream.
Delap is not fully sold.
Reports suggest he wants to stay in the Premier League, even if it means walking away from the glamour of European nights in Italy. That stance immediately drags Nottingham Forest into sharper focus.
Forest have moved into the frame and are expected to be busy late in the window, especially with Taiwo Awoniyi on course to join Coventry City. A striker slot is opening up at the City Ground, and Delap fits the profile: young, Premier League experience, and with upside that still excites recruitment departments.
A season that never really started
Delap’s first year at Chelsea never caught fire. Fitness issues stalked him from month to month, chopping up his rhythm and limiting him to a single Premier League goal. For a forward trying to establish himself at an elite club, it was a brutal introduction.
Yet his reputation has not collapsed with that tally. Far from it.
Clubs still remember what he did at Ipswich Town. In their first season back in the top flight, Delap hit 12 goals and looked every bit a modern centre-forward: aggressive, mobile, and dangerous when confident. That campaign continues to prop up his value and explains why Chelsea feel emboldened to demand a premium fee.

Delap’s international future is also in the balance. He has already worn England colours at various youth levels, but the senior call has not arrived. Through his father, Rory Delap, he also remains eligible for the Republic of Ireland.
