Leipzig’s leaders didn’t bother dressing this one up. They had been outclassed, and they knew it.

“A real thrashing” – Raum lays it bare

Captain David Raum cut a brutally honest figure after Leipzig’s heavy defeat, admitting his side were nowhere near the level required on the European stage.

“This feels really awful, we got a real thrashing today,” the 28-year-old left-back said, refusing to hide behind excuses. “The first half was terrible. The second [half was] maybe a touch better. Overall, it wasn't a good performance from us.”

Leipzig arrived with what Raum insisted was a clear tactical blueprint. It never showed.

“We have to learn from this. We need to get together as soon as possible, we actually had a clear plan,” he continued. “But we weren't brave or clever enough with the ball again. We had the chances to play. But it wasn't sharp enough, there just wasn't enough of anything today.”

The admission cut to the core of Leipzig’s problems: not structure, but mentality and execution. The spaces were there, the options were there. The conviction was not.

Orban: “We couldn’t get a grip”

If Raum’s assessment was harsh, Willi Orban’s was no softer. The central defender pointed straight at Como’s dominance and his own side’s inability to disrupt it.

“We had a reasonable game plan, but it quickly became clear that we couldn't get a grip on Como's game,” the 33-year-old said.

From the touchline, Cesc Fabregas orchestrated a statement performance from his Serie A newcomers, who have been heavily backed under Djarum Group ownership since 2019. On the pitch, Leipzig chased shadows.

“This game hurts a lot today,” Orban admitted. “Como showed us what it means to be active with the ball, to make decisions on the ball, and to play good passes in the final third. We need to learn that from our opponents today; credit to them. Ultimately, our game plan didn't work out.”
