Leeds United Sign Nico Elvedi: Farke's Trusted Defender Joins
Leeds United have reunited Daniel Farke with a trusted lieutenant, sealing the signing of Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth up to £8.5m.
The 29-year-old centre-back has agreed a three-year contract at Elland Road, ending an 11-year stay in Germany and stepping into a Championship campaign that demands experience and calm under pressure.
Farke reunion seals the deal
Elvedi did not hide the importance of the man in the dugout.
"He is also a big point for this change," the defender said of Farke, who coached him at Monchengladbach in the 2022-23 season. "It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now."
That relationship has now been lifted out of the Bundesliga and dropped into West Yorkshire, with Leeds banking on familiarity to speed up his adaptation.
Monchengladbach accepted an offer of £6.8m up front, with a further £1.7m in add-ons, for a player who became one of their modern stalwarts. Elvedi made 364 appearances for the club, growing from promising youngster into a regular international.
Big-game pedigree
Leeds are not just buying a familiar face for Farke. They are buying a defender hardened by major tournaments.
Elvedi has 73 caps for Switzerland and played every minute of their recent run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, anchoring a back line that handled some of the game’s biggest stages and brightest attacks.
That kind of pedigree is rare in the Championship. Leeds are betting that his reading of the game, positional discipline and composure under stress will translate quickly to a division where chaos is often the norm.
Reshaping the back line
Elvedi becomes Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer window, following James Trafford, Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic, as the club methodically rebuilds its spine.
His arrival has already triggered movement. Sebastiaan Bornauw has left Elland Road to join Hamburg on a season-long loan, a clear sign that Elvedi is expected to step straight into a prominent role in Farke’s defensive plans.
There was more business on Wednesday. Striker Joel Piroe departed for West Ham on a season-long loan, trimming Leeds’ attacking options while the club strengthens at the other end of the pitch.
Elvedi walks into a club under pressure to climb, a manager he trusts, and a league that will test every tackle and decision. Leeds have given Farke his man. Now the question is simple: can this partnership, rebuilt in white, carry them where they want to go?
