Leeds United's Opening Day Win: Merson's Caution on Wilson and Trafford
Paul Merson has urged Leeds United fans to keep their feet on the ground after the opening‑day win at Nottingham Forest, describing Harry Wilson’s debut as “all right” rather than outstanding – but still calling the winger a smart piece of business.
Leeds edged a 1-0 victory at the City Ground thanks to Anton Stach’s late strike, giving Daniel Farke exactly the start he wanted on the road. The performance, though, didn’t convince everyone.
“Great result for Leeds but don’t get carried away, it wasn’t great,” Merson said, striking a note of caution after a tight, scrappy contest.
Wilson’s quiet start, big potential
Wilson arrived at Elland Road on a free transfer after his spell with Fulham, and Merson sees the logic. A low‑risk deal, a proven left foot, and a player who can change games from dead-ball situations.
On the day, though, Merson felt the debut was more functional than thrilling.
“He did all right, he wasn’t great,” he said. “A couple of good balls in, he scored a goal that was offside. He did all right for his debut. First real game.”
For Merson, the key is what Wilson can bring across a long season, especially when Leeds hit a tactical brick wall.
“I think he’s a good signing for them, anybody on a free is a good signing,” he added. “Because I don’t see them opening up teams every week, and I think you need that set play.”
In other words: the fireworks can come later. For now, Leeds have a specialist who might decide tight games when open play dries up.
Trafford wins an early admirer
If Wilson’s afternoon was steady, James Trafford’s was far more eye-catching.
The goalkeeper, signed for a substantial fee from Manchester City in the summer, marked his league bow for Leeds with a clean sheet and a performance that immediately won Merson over.
“I think Trafford, big fan of Trafford,” Merson said. “Thought he had that composure, he’s got confidence about him, comes out for balls at the right time, didn’t look panicky.”
Under pressure late on, Trafford’s decision-making stood out.
“What a bonus for Leeds, you always need a good goalkeeper, he’ll save you points,” Merson continued. “Made a couple of good saves today, just when the pressure was on he’d come out, collect the ball, no dramas. Just done what it said on the tin.”
For a club with promotion ambitions, that kind of calm presence behind the back line can define a season.
Farke backs his new faces
Farke, for his part, sounded satisfied with all of his debutants, including defender Tarik Muharemovic, who also featured against Forest.
“I am very happy because they have big boots to fill,” he said. “Trafford is a good player but he hasn’t played that many Premier League games, Tarik too. So they both shined and showed why we agreed to sign them, but the whole group was excellent today.
“Wilson too was excellent. The vibe and mood is good around the place.”
One game down, three new signings already under the spotlight. The result is in the bank. The real question now is whether this Leeds side can turn Merson’s cautious approval into sustained authority over the months to come.
