Lazio Pursues Mauro Icardi as Striker Target
Lazio have put Mauro Icardi at the top of their striker shortlist. For now, the feeling is not exactly mutual.
The Rome club are trying to bring in the 33-year-old on a free transfer, seeing him as a marquee addition to lead their attack. Icardi, once one of Serie A’s deadliest finishers with Sampdoria and then as captain of Inter Milan, has been without a club since the start of the summer after spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Galatasaray.
On paper, it looks like a clean deal: no transfer fee, a proven goalscorer, and a team that needs a reference point up front. In reality, it is anything but straightforward.
Talks Frozen as Icardi Waits
In recent weeks, Icardi has been widely viewed as Lazio’s primary target for the No. 9 role, in tandem with interest in Sassuolo striker Andrea Pinamonti. Sporting director Angelo Fabiani and his team have pushed to find an agreement, but they have hit a wall.
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Icardi and his entourage initially signalled a willingness to sit down with Lazio and explore a deal. That stance has now changed. The talks are on ice.
Earlier reports had highlighted a sizeable gap between Lazio’s proposal and Icardi’s salary demands. Di Marzio, though, underlines a different key factor: the sporting project. At this stage of his career, the Argentine is focused less on squeezing out the biggest contract and more on choosing the right environment.
He knows he does not have many moves left. One wrong step now could define the final years of a career that once lit up San Siro and the Parc des Princes. So he is prepared to wait.
Lazio Race the Clock, Icardi Does Not
Icardi is expected to take his time, listen to other offers and then decide on his next destination. As a free agent, he has that luxury. He can sign even after the transfer window closes, a crucial detail that gives him leverage and patience that clubs do not enjoy.
Lazio, by contrast, cannot afford to drift. With the season approaching its decisive early stretch and the striker position still not fully resolved, every day spent waiting for Icardi is a day lost in the market.
For now, the ball sits at Icardi’s feet. Lazio must decide how long they are willing to watch and wait.
