The Premier League’s biggest recruiters have fixed their gaze on Ligue 1 again – and this time the scramble is for Monaco’s driving force in midfield, Lamine Camara.
The 22-year-old Senegal international has become the subject of a fierce tug of war, with Manchester United, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest all pushing to prise him out of the Principality, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.
A €15m gamble that exploded into a €60m asset
Monaco paid €15m to take Camara from FC Metz in July 2024. It already looks like one of the smartest pieces of business in France in recent years.
Since that move, Camara has racked up 71 appearances for Monaco, growing from a promising prospect into one of the most dynamic young midfielders in Ligue 1. He covers the pitch relentlessly, snaps into tackles, carries the ball with purpose and has the imagination to unlock defences in the final third. He is not a specialist; he is the engine.
His rise has mirrored his growing influence for Senegal. Camara started all four of his country’s matches at the World Cup, driving Aliou Cissé’s side through the group stage before their painful round-of-32 exit to Belgium. That tournament hardened his reputation as a big-stage performer.
Back at Monaco, he has slipped straight into pre-season rhythm. On Sunday he helped his club beat Liverpool 3-2 in a friendly, a timely reminder of his quality in front of one of his main suitors.
English queue forms for Monaco’s midfield gem
That performance only sharpened the interest already building in England.
Foot Mercato report a “fierce” battle for his signature, with United, Liverpool, Palace and Forest all active in the chase. United and Liverpool are described as “in the hunt”, having expressed interest earlier in the year and continued to monitor his situation closely.
The danger for the two heavyweights is that the so‑called smaller clubs move quicker.
Crystal Palace have already put a concrete offer on the table. Nottingham Forest, for their part, are said to be poised to lodge an official bid in the coming days. Palace, backed by a clear plan and a track record of developing young talent, are trying to steal a march while the giants weigh up their next move.
Initial indications from France suggested Monaco wanted around €50m (£43m) for Camara. But separate reports now claim the Ligue 1 side are holding out for closer to €60m (£51m) and have already rejected a €50m proposal from Palace. For a club that has made a habit of selling high, Monaco know exactly what they have on their hands.
United’s midfield rebuild – and the missing piece
Manchester United’s summer has already brought Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans through the door as part of a wider midfield reset. The plan is clear: add legs, control and variety in the centre of the pitch.
Camara would represent the third pillar of that rebuild. He is not yet a superstar name, but his profile screams upside – box-to-box energy, aggression without recklessness, and the ability to link defence to attack at pace.
United have seen other targets drift away. Alex Scott and Aurelien Tchouameni look set to slip from their grasp, forcing the club to widen the search. Alongside Camara, names such as Sander Berge, Tyler Adams and Carlos Baleba are being assessed.
The question is whether United are prepared to go to Monaco’s asking price for a player who fits their needs but is still in the “next big thing” bracket rather than the finished article.
Liverpool’s need for spark and steel
Across the divide, Liverpool’s midfield puzzle looks just as demanding.
They need fresh energy and quality in the middle of the park, someone who can press, carry, and create in equal measure. Camara ticks those boxes. His style would mesh with a high-intensity system, while his composure on the ball would ease the creative burden on others.
There is also a potential domino effect at Anfield. Inter Milan are tracking Curtis Jones, and if Liverpool decide to cash in, Camara would be a natural candidate to step into that role. His presence could also free Alexis Mac Allister, who struggled to consistently hit his best level last season, to operate higher up the pitch or in more favourable zones.
