Kaizer Chiefs Target Lungelo Maxwele as Orlando Pirates Loom

The transfer window has not even swung open yet, but Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are already circling the same prize. Again.

This time the focal point is 25-year-old midfield dynamo Lungelo Maxwele, and the early manoeuvring suggests Amakhosi have stolen a march on their great rivals.

Chiefs Strike First

According to well-placed Kaizer Chiefs insider Innocent Mkhize, Chiefs have already agreed personal terms with Maxwele as they move to inject fresh energy into their midfield for the new campaign.

It’s a significant step. Salary, contract length, personal conditions – all reportedly settled.

But not the deal.

The move now sits squarely in the hands of Golden Arrows chairlady Mato Madlala, whose stance could flip the story on its head. Mkhize indicates that while Chiefs have convinced the player, Madlala would rather see Maxwele join Orlando Pirates than make the switch to Naturena.

So, one of South African football’s most familiar storylines returns: Chiefs on one side, Pirates on the other, a coveted talent in the middle, and a club boss holding the final word.

A Player Built for the Big Stage

Maxwele has not arrived in this position by accident.

After Royal AM’s expulsion from the Premier Soccer League in 2025, he landed at Golden Arrows as a free agent. It could have been a career setback. Instead, he turned it into a platform.

In his first season with Arrows, the Mthatha-born midfielder became a regular feature in the side. He made 23 league appearances and added further minutes in cup competitions, finishing the campaign with three goals and one assist across all tournaments.

The numbers only tell part of the story. His game is built on relentless running, aggressive pressing and a willingness to drive the ball through the heart of midfield. Coaches value players who can shift between roles without losing intensity; Maxwele has shown he can operate centrally or drift into wider attacking zones and still influence the game.

That blend of energy and versatility explains why both Chiefs and Pirates are circling. He offers legs, bite and forward thrust – exactly what top clubs crave when they talk about “adding dynamism” to a squad.

Chiefs Lead, Arrows Decide

Right now, on a personal level, Chiefs are in front. The player is believed to be aligned with Amakhosi’s proposal, and from their side, the groundwork is done.

But this is not a free-agent scenario. Arrows still control the contract, and Madlala’s preference for seeing Maxwele at Pirates rather than Chiefs introduces a sharp twist to the tale.

It sets up the prospect of another fierce off-field contest between the country’s two biggest clubs, both of whom rate the same midfielder, both of whom see him as a piece that can tilt tight games.

As 1 July approaches and the window opens, the situation moves from private talks to open-season jostling. Chiefs have made their play. Pirates remain firmly in the frame.

Golden Arrows, and Mato Madlala in particular, now decide which giant gets their man – and which midfield gets the extra engine for the battles to come.
