Juventus Signs Guglielmo Vicario on Loan from Tottenham
Juventus have struck a deal with Tottenham to take Guglielmo Vicario on an initial loan, turning away from a move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez after talks over the Argentina goalkeeper stalled.
The agreement sends Vicario to Turin with an option to buy next year for £8.6m, a sharp drop from the £17.2m Spurs paid to bring him to north London in 2023. It underlines how quickly his status has shifted. Once the undisputed No 1, he has lost his place under Roberto De Zerbi to Antonin Kinsky and is now heading for the exit.
Juventus pivot from Martínez to Vicario
Juventus had pushed to make Martínez their new goalkeeper after Villa lined up Parma’s Zion Suzuki in a deal worth around £30m. The Italian club tested Villa’s resolve with a €10m offer over the weekend. It was rejected. That closed one door and opened another.
With Martínez currently sidelined by a finger injury and Villa holding firm on their valuation, Juventus moved on. Vicario, experienced, available and keen for regular football, quickly became the preferred option.
For the Italy international, the move offers a reset. He has racked up almost 120 appearances for Spurs since arriving last year, but De Zerbi’s reshaping of the squad has been ruthless. Once Kinsky took the gloves and Martin Dubravka arrived on a free as cover, the path was clear: Vicario would be next out.
Spurs’ overhaul gathers pace
Vicario’s departure continues a summer of churn at Tottenham. Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, Will Lankshear and Yves Bissouma have already gone, and the outflow may not be finished. Pape Matar Sarr is attracting strong interest from Everton and Nottingham Forest, with Spurs valuing the Senegal midfielder at £30m.
All of this is happening against the backdrop of heavy spending. Tottenham have already committed more than £200m on six new signings in this window, a statement of intent that matches De Zerbi’s aggressive approach on the pitch.
He is not done yet.
Eyes on Savinho and Gakpo
Attention now turns to the attack. Spurs are pushing to sign Savinho from Manchester City, sensing an opportunity after the Brazil forward was left out of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in Cardiff. Savinho is thought to be open to the move, and Tottenham see his pace and directness as an ideal fit for De Zerbi’s front line.
Cody Gakpo is another live option. Spurs have been heavily linked with the Liverpool forward as De Zerbi looks to deepen his attacking options and add more versatility across the front three.
A new goalkeeper heading to Turin, an old one pushed down the pecking order in north London, and an attack still under construction: Tottenham’s summer is far from quiet. The real question is how different this team will look by the time the window slams shut – and whether De Zerbi’s bold rebuild will match the scale of the club’s ambition.
