Juventus Sign Jhon Lucumi as New Defensive Anchor
Juventus have their new defensive anchor.
The Turin club have sealed a deal for Jhon Lucumi, reaching an agreement with Bologna for an initial €18 million fee, plus a further €2 million in potential bonuses. The Colombian centre-back has signed a four-year contract worth €3 million net per season, tying his future to the Bianconeri at a stage many consider the peak of his career.
This was not a move of convenience. Lucumi made his choice early and clearly, putting Juventus at the top of his list despite interest from other clubs. The pull of Turin, of a rebuilt backline and the promise of competing for major honours, proved decisive.
From Cali to Turin, via Belgium and Bologna
Lucumi’s journey has been anything but rushed. He broke through at Deportivo Cali at just 17, then crossed the Atlantic to Genk in 2018, where he grew into one of the standout defenders in Belgian football. That spell in Belgium hardened his game: timing in the tackle, calm on the ball, and a growing authority in the air.
Bologna brought him to Serie A in the summer of 2022. Over four seasons at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, he became a constant in their defence, an ever-present pillar rather than a rotating piece. Across 152 appearances in all competitions, the 28-year-old established himself as one of the most reliable centre-backs in the league.
He even carried that composure onto the Champions League stage with the Rossoblu, marking Bologna’s rise with his own. One of his two goals for the club arrived in that campaign, a rare but timely contribution from the back.
Juventus captured the mood in their official announcement, hailing Lucumi as a player “at the peak of his powers, ready to make an immediate contribution to the team ahead of the 2026/27 season.” The welcome was simple and emphatic: “Welcome to Juventus, Jhon!”
A defence under new command
There will be no easing-in period. With the transfer now complete, Lucumi is set to dive straight into tactical work with his new team-mates as the coaching staff shape a refreshed defensive structure around him.
The calendar offers no gentle introduction. Juventus open their 2026-27 Serie A campaign away to Frosinone on Sunday, August 23, a fixture already circled as Lucumi’s likely competitive debut in black and white. All signs point to him stepping straight into the heart of the backline, expected not just to defend, but to organise, to lead, to set the tone.
