Juventus Goalkeeping Dilemma: Who Will Support Vicario?

Juventus’ goalkeeping situation was supposed to calm down the moment Guglielmo Vicario walked through the door on a season-long loan.

It has done anything but.

Barely into August, Juventus are bracing to enter the market for a second goalkeeper, with both of their main options from the past two seasons heading toward the exit at Continassa. Last year’s starter, Michele Di Gregorio, has accepted that his time is up and agreed a season-long loan move to the Premier League with Bournemouth. Behind him, long-time deputy Mattia Perin is also preparing to go, with a transfer to Serie B side Palermo being lined up in the final week of the summer window.

Di Gregorio’s deal with Bournemouth will include an option to buy, set at around €14-15 million according to multiple reports. For a keeper whose “adventurous” campaign in Turin was littered with errors and soft concessions at the near post, it feels like a clean break for all parties.

Perin’s case is different. The 31-year-old is expected to join Palermo on a permanent basis, with the clubs still ironing out the final fee. The contract on the table is described as a strong one, and the move would finally give him the regular football he has largely sacrificed in recent years.

That is what makes this potential departure sting a little more for Juventus supporters. Perin has long seemed content with the role of luxury backup in Turin, happy to play 10-15 games a season for a club chasing titles rather than start every week at a smaller side. Now, with Palermo pushing and Juve’s hierarchy apparently ready to refresh the position, that loyalty is being tested.

As things stand, only Vicario and third-choice veteran Carlo Pinsoglio — the dressing-room leader and self-appointed “dad” of the squad — are certain to be in the matchday group for Sunday’s Serie A opener away to Frosinone. It is a thin, makeshift-looking depth chart for a club of Juventus’ stature.

Maybe that is the point. After a sixth-place finish scarred by goalkeeping mistakes and defensive uncertainty, this feels like a deliberate reset. Strip it back. Change the faces. Keep only the trusted voice of Pinsoglio in the background and build something new in front of him.

The question now is simple: who do Juventus trust to stand alongside Vicario as they try to erase the memory of last season’s chaos?
