Julian Alvarez's Return to Atletico Madrid Squad Amid Transfer Drama
Julian Alvarez’s turbulent week at Atletico Madrid has ended with a place back in Diego Simeone’s squad – and a seat on the bench – for the La Liga clash with Villarreal.
The Argentina forward, at the centre of a simmering transfer saga and wanted by Arsenal, has been restored to the matchday group after being left out of the midweek win over Malaga. Atletico start without a recognised No. 9, but Simeone has made sure Alvarez is at least in reserve.
Simeone stands firm
Simeone had already signposted the decision in his pre-match press conference.
“Julian Alvarez will be in the squad tomorrow,” he said. “For me, Julian is an extremely important player for us to achieve our objectives. As long as he’s with the team, I’m going to look after him.”
Those words landed after a chaotic spell in which Alvarez’s desire to leave for Barcelona infuriated sections of the Atletico support. The mood around the club’s Majadahonda training base turned sour, with posters appearing on Friday morning reading “JULIAN FUERA” – “JULIAN OUT” – and his No. 19 shirt number aggressively crossed out.
Even so, Simeone has nailed his colours to the mast, defending the 24-year-old despite the backlash.
“I respect our fans. I always have, but I don’t agree with insults or abuse,” he said. “Every word is being scrutinised by people waiting to create conflict and uncertainty. There is no uncertainty. Miguel was very clear. He is our player and we need him.”
From Barcelona dream to Arsenal interest
Alvarez’s push for Barcelona has been the flashpoint. Atletico have refused to sanction the move, and that stance has fuelled his frustration and the anger in the stands.
The former Manchester City forward has also been in contact with Mikel Arteta over a potential switch to Arsenal, but the pull is not the same. The Emirates is an option; Camp Nou is the dream. For now, neither is happening.
Inside the club, the line is simple: Alvarez stays. Simeone’s selection for Villarreal underlines that, even if the relationship with the fanbase has clearly been damaged.
Fitness questions and a changing attack
Simeone initially justified Alvarez’s absence from the Malaga game on fitness grounds, pointing to the striker’s extended break after the World Cup.
“We don’t believe Julián Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow’s game,” he said before that fixture. “Hopefully, over these next four days, he’ll make further progress and we’ll be closer to where we want him to be.”
Four days later, Alvarez is back in the squad. The noise around his future has not gone away, but Atletico’s need for goals – and Simeone’s insistence on his importance – has dragged him straight back into the fold.
At the same time, the club are actively positioning themselves for what could come next. Atletico have been named among the frontrunners to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea, with reports in Spain suggesting the Senegal international has already “said yes” to a move.
If that deal happens, the dynamic in Atletico’s forward line shifts again. For now, though, with Barcelona blocked and Arsenal lurking in the background, Alvarez finds himself in a strange limbo: booed by some of his own fans, defended fiercely by his coach, and waiting on the bench to see if he still has a future in red and white.
