Julian Alvarez Faces Decision Between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid
Julian Alvarez’s future is hanging on a knife edge, and the decision is now in his hands.
Spanish journalist Pedro Morata reports that the forward will decide today whether to open full negotiations with Arsenal or stay put at Atletico Madrid. Only weeks ago, he had shut the door on every option that didn’t lead to Barcelona. That stance has cracked.
He is now said to be listening to Arsenal, even if he still carries serious doubts and has no real desire to return to England. The internal balance, according to Morata, tilts slightly towards staying: 55 per cent in favour of remaining in Spain, 45 per cent for a move to north London. For a player once fixated on Catalonia, that alone marks a major shift.
Atletico and Arsenal at a stand-off
The numbers on the table are huge and still not enough.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Atletico’s director of football, Mateu Alemany, recently flew to London for talks with Arsenal. The Premier League club have already tested Atletico’s resolve with an opening offer of £103 million plus £4m in add-ons.
Atletico’s answer was blunt: £129m or nothing.
Publicly, Atletico have tried to project an image of total resistance. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has previously insisted they would not even consider proposals of €150m or €200m. Yet behind the scenes, the club are understood to be willing to negotiate with Arsenal, driven in part by their interest in Viktor Gyokeres as a potential replacement.
That leaves a gap between rhetoric and reality – and a very expensive problem for Arsenal. To land Alvarez, they must decide whether to smash through Atletico’s demands or walk away and pivot to other targets with the window about to slam shut.
Tense atmosphere in Madrid
The saga has already spilled onto the pitch – or rather, off it.
Alvarez was left out of Atletico Madrid’s opening La Liga game, a 2-0 home win over Malaga. His absence did not go unnoticed. Sections of the home crowd turned on him, with hostile chants reflecting a mood that has darkened as the deadline creeps closer.
Diego Simeone tried to cool the situation in public.
“We don't believe Julian Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow's game. Hopefully, over these next four days, he'll make further progress and we'll be closer to where we want him to be,” the Atletico coach explained.
Officially, it was about fitness. Unofficially, the timing only poured fuel on the transfer speculation. A key forward, a huge bid on the table, a looming decision – and a player nowhere near the matchday squad.
Arsenal’s moment of truth
For Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, the situation is brutally simple.
The transfer window is closing. Atletico have set a towering price. Alvarez is expected to communicate his final decision on his future today. If he gives the green light and Arsenal refuse to climb towards that £129m figure, the move dies.
If the two clubs cannot find common ground, Arsenal will be forced into a late scramble for an alternative attacking signing before the deadline. The money, the doubts, the pressure from fans in Madrid – all of it now circles around one question:
