Julian Alvarez’s return to Atletico Madrid’s home turf turned sour on Sunday, as the forward was engulfed by jeers from his own supporters amid his push to leave the club.

The Argentinian, determined to force a move away from the Spanish capital this summer, has been strongly linked with Premier League champions Arsenal and Barcelona. Atletico’s stance remains firm: he is not for sale. The tension is growing by the week.

All of that crackled into focus the moment Atletico’s team sheet dropped for the first home game of the season against Villarreal. Alvarez’s name appeared, but only among the substitutes. It was a selection that did nothing to cool the atmosphere.
