Julian Álvarez Faces His Mistakes in Atlético Madrid Dressing Room
Julian Álvarez has spent the summer at the eye of the storm. Now, inside the Metropolitano dressing room, he has finally faced it.
After weeks of silence and speculation, the Atlético Madrid forward has addressed his failed push for a move and, crucially, his own role in the chaos. As reported by Cadena SER’s Martín Talavera, the Argentine has admitted to his teammates that he mishandled his public transfer request during the World Cup and has stopped trying to hide from it.
“Julian Alvarez isn't hiding the fact that he made a mistake in the dressing room. Until recently, he didn't talk about it, but now he's openly admitting his errors, especially in how he handled things,” Talavera explained.
From Camp Nou dream to Atleti reality
For large stretches of the window, it looked like Álvarez was heading straight for Barcelona. His camp worked the angles, sounding out a move to Catalonia, and the message from the player’s side was clear: he was open to the switch.
A key moment came in Madrid. Barcelona sporting director Deco sat down with Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, a meeting that underlined how serious the Blaugrana were about prising the 2022 World Cup winner away. The path seemed to be opening towards the Spotify Camp Nou.
Then Atlético’s hierarchy slammed the door.
Led by CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, the club refused to sanction a sale to a direct La Liga rival. No matter how advanced the talks or how restless the player, Atleti held their line. Strengthening Barcelona was never on the table.
The message was blunt: if Álvarez left, it would not be to another Spanish giant. And with the window ticking down and no acceptable alternative emerging, the exit that had felt inevitable suddenly evaporated.
A reset inside the dressing room
Once it became clear he was staying, Álvarez’s stance shifted. Fast.
With the domestic route blocked and the clock running out, the 26-year-old has thrown himself back into the Atlético cause. Talavera reports that the striker has spoken directly to his teammates, promising total commitment to the club and the badge.
“He has told his teammates that his commitment is total, and that the time he spends with Atletico Madrid, which will be three years under contract, is paramount,” the journalist noted.
For Diego Simeone, that is no small development. The coach still views Álvarez as a central piece of his attack looking ahead to the 2026-27 campaign, and any lingering doubt about the player’s mindset would have been a serious concern. Instead, Simeone now has a forward who has owned his mistake and publicly pledged to “leave everything on the pitch” for Atlético for as long as he remains in Madrid.
The dressing room, once clouded by uncertainty over his intentions, now has clarity. Álvarez stays. And he fights.
Fitness first, Marseille later
There is, however, another issue to resolve before he can fully rejoin the action: his physical condition.
Álvarez returned late to pre-season after Argentina’s exhausting run to the 2026 World Cup final. Atlético’s staff have decided not to rush him back. He will follow a tailored fitness programme in Madrid to bring him up to the same level as the rest of the squad, with the medical and coaching teams taking no chances with his workload.
That approach comes with an immediate consequence. The striker is expected to sit out the upcoming friendly against Marseille, remaining in the Spanish capital to work on his conditioning while his teammates travel.
The transfer saga may have closed without the move he pushed for, but a different kind of challenge now begins: winning back every last ounce of trust on the pitch, in front of a fanbase that will demand proof of that “total” commitment with every run, every duel, every goal.
