Julian Alvarez felt the full weight of Atletico Madrid’s anger on Sunday, whistled and booed on his return to action against Villarreal as speculation over a move to Arsenal gathered pace.
Left out of the midweek win over Malaga to rebuild fitness after his post-World Cup final break, the Argentina forward was back in Diego Simeone’s matchday squad at the Metropolitano. His name over the tannoy drew a hostile response before kick-off. The mood did not soften.

“No, I’m not in a position to give advice to the fans. I think I need to focus on my work, which is to give my best on the sporting side for the good of Atletico de Madrid.
“The only thing I know is that if Atletico de Madrid wants to win a title, we have to be united. We need forwards, and we need important forwards. For that, of course, we all have to work in that direction to give the team what it needs.”
Those words cut to the heart of Atletico’s dilemma. They need goals. They also have a forward whose future hangs in the balance.
Alvarez has been open about his wish to join Barcelona this summer, pushing for a move that never materialised. The LaLiga champions are now understood to be pursuing other targets, cooling their interest and leaving the striker in limbo.
That shift has opened the door for Arsenal. The Premier League side have been monitoring the situation and, with the window ticking towards its deadline, talk of a late swoop has intensified.
