José Mourinho's Vision for Arda Güler's Career Path

José Mourinho does not just see a talent in Arda Güler. He sees a career path.

"I love Arda. I think something similar will happen to Arda to what happened to Luka (Modric) and Bernardo (Silva): you start at the front and finish at the back," the Portuguese coach said, laying out a vision that stretches far beyond the teenager’s current role.

Mourinho spelled it out in detail. "You start as a number 10, as an attacking player, and end up as a number 8, then as a number 6. I believe Arda will go down that path given his development and his understanding of the game."

This is not a throwaway compliment. It is a roadmap, and it arrives at a delicate moment for both player and club.

Güler’s future in a changing Madrid midfield

Real Madrid are coming off a season that fell short of their own standards. No titles of the calibre they had targeted, and now a squad in need of reshaping. Mourinho has to blend new signings into an already star-heavy dressing room while reigniting those who have stalled.

Arda Güler is right at the centre of that challenge.

Signed from Fenerbahce in 2023 for a hefty 28 million euros, the Turkish international arrived with the label of prodigy. Yet in a squad stacked with attacking talent, he has struggled to carve out a permanent place. Part of that has been down to uncertainty over his best position. Is he a pure No.10? A wide creator? An interior?

Under Mourinho, that ambiguity is starting to clear.

With Toni Kroos and Luka Modric gone, Madrid have lost their classic deep-lying conductors, the players who dictate rhythm from the back of midfield. Their attempt to fill that void with World Cup winner Rodri fell apart when the midfielder chose Barcelona instead.

The current options in central midfield tell their own story. Fede Valverde brings power and vertical running. Aurelien Tchouameni offers defensive presence and physical dominance. Neither is a natural tempo-setter in the Kroos or Modric mould.

That gap opens a door.

For Güler, a move into a deeper role – first as a No.8, eventually as a No.6 in build-up – could be his route to regular minutes. Mourinho clearly believes the Turk’s technique and game intelligence can translate into that responsibility. If the coach is right, Madrid may end up solving a structural problem with a player they already own.

Mourinho’s faith in Bernardo Silva

Güler is not the only midfielder Mourinho is repositioning in his mind.

On the same programme, he turned to new signing Bernardo Silva, a statement arrival for Real Madrid after the club beat off interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

"He is a Pep Guardiola player and gives you everything. I hope we will have few problems and a lot of stability. If we have few problems and a lot of stability, then for me today Bernardo is a player for central midfield," Mourinho said.

The praise kept coming. "But Bernardo can play as a number 10, on the right wing, drift inside. Bernardo can play anywhere."

That versatility is exactly what Mourinho wants as he rebuilds the core of his team. A player who can run a game from midfield, then step higher between the lines or out wide when the match demands it.

The coach also pushed back against any suggestion that the transfer was about scoring a point off their rivals.

"He is a player I have loved forever. It has nothing to do with Barcelona wanting him, Atletico wanting him. Nothing to do with us stealing him because our neighbour would then be sad. It was my conviction that Bernardo matches Real Madrid's level."

So the picture is clear. Mourinho sees Bernardo as the ready-made reference in central midfield. And he sees Arda Güler as the long-term project who can grow from creator to controller.

If both visions land, Madrid’s next great midfield might already be in the building.
