Jose Mourinho's Message to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho told Vinicius Jr it was “not worth” walking away from Real Madrid – and the Brazilian listened.
The 26-year-old winger had entered the final year of his deal at the Bernabeu, a situation that put Europe’s elite on alert. With his contract running down, Vinicius would have been free to leave next summer, and Arsenal, fresh from a Premier League title, sensed an opening to prise away one of the game’s most devastating wide forwards.
Instead, he has tied himself to Real Madrid until 2030, signing a six-year contract earlier this month. Behind that decision, Mourinho says, was a simple, blunt message.
Mourinho’s pitch: ‘Don’t leave. It’s not worth it’
Back at Real for a second spell, confirmed in June, the 63-year-old has wasted no time asserting his influence. Speaking on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, Mourinho laid out exactly what he told Vinicius.
“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” he said.
“The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”
It was part warning, part challenge, and very much classic Mourinho: appeal to emotion, identity, and the weight of the shirt.
He believes the work on the training ground has done the rest.
“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” Mourinho added.
The message landed. Arsenal’s interest never turned into a transfer saga. The winger who has become a symbol of Real’s new era chose permanence over a fresh start in England.
From Champions League opponents to allies
Mourinho’s relationship with Vinicius is not a long-standing one. Last season, they stood on opposite sides.
As Benfica manager, Mourinho faced Real Madrid three times in the Champions League. The most charged moment came during the first leg of their knockout phase play-off, when Real players alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Vinicius.
The match stopped for around eight minutes. Tension, confusion, anger – it all spilled out under the floodlights.
Prestianni denied the claims. Mourinho, as he has throughout his career, stood publicly behind his own player.
“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate. If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story,” he said.
Uefa later banned Prestianni for three matches, with a further three suspended, for homophobic conduct. The governing body did not issue a racism-related sanction in that case.
‘He can rely on me to be on his side’
Now, the dynamic has flipped. Vinicius is no longer the star forward in the opposition dugout; he is Mourinho’s key attacking weapon, a player central to Real Madrid’s present and future.
Mourinho addressed that Champions League incident and made it clear where he stands today.
He said Vinicius can “rely on me to be on his side”.
“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side,” Mourinho said.
From adversary to protector, from transfer target to long-term cornerstone, Vinicius enters his peak years with Real Madrid and Mourinho tied to the same cause. The question now is not whether he should have left, but how far this partnership can take the European champions.
