Joao Cancelo's Move to Barcelona Nears Completion

Joao Cancelo is edging closer to the move he has wanted all summer – a permanent return to Barcelona.

The Portugal international, currently on the books of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, is now reportedly on the verge of terminating his contract, a step that could clear the way for him to join Barça as a free agent.

Al-Hilal had been holding out for a transfer fee in the region of €10-15 million for the defender, who is under contract with the club until 2027. Talks between the two clubs have been ongoing throughout the summer, with Barcelona reluctant to commit significant funds but keen to keep a player who impressed during his loan spell last season.

The situation has taken a sharp turn. According to Saudi sports newspaper Arriyadiyah and reporter Hamad Al-Suwaih, Al-Hilal are close to agreeing a contract termination with Cancelo. The report states that such a deal would “pave the way” for him to sign for Barcelona.

That is exactly the outcome Cancelo has been pushing for. The full-back has made no secret of his desire to stay at Barcelona after enjoying his second loan spell at the club last season, operating on both flanks and quickly becoming a key figure in the squad.

If the termination is completed, Barcelona would be able to bring him back without paying a transfer fee, a crucial factor for a club still working within tight financial restrictions.

With the new La Liga season fast approaching, Cancelo’s future now looks increasingly likely to be decided in time for him to walk back into the Camp Nou dressing room – this time with a permanent place to call his own.
