Joao Cancelo Returns to Barcelona on Permanent Deal
Joao Cancelo is back at Barcelona – this time to stay.
The Portugal full-back has signed a three-year permanent deal at Camp Nou after mutually terminating his contract with Al-Hilal, ending a short and curious chapter in Saudi Arabia and reopening one that always felt unfinished in Catalonia.
“I’m where I want to be and I am very happy,” Cancelo said. “I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club.”
For a player who has bounced across Europe’s elite, this move carries a different weight. It’s not another stop. It’s a return.
From Saudi detour to Camp Nou home
Cancelo left Manchester City for Al-Hilal on a three-year deal in 2024, part of the wave of big-name arrivals in the Saudi Pro League. But his football did its loudest talking back in Spain.
He spent last season on loan at Barca, playing a key role as they secured the La Liga title. That campaign reinforced a simple truth: his dynamic, attacking full-back profile fits the club’s style and the league’s rhythm.
Once his Al-Hilal contract was ripped up by mutual agreement, the 32-year-old hit the market as a free agent. There was only one destination that made sense to him. Barcelona moved quickly and tied him down until 2027.
A career built on big moves
Cancelo’s relationship with Spanish football began a decade ago. In 2014 he arrived at Valencia from Benfica, initially on loan, starting a journey that would take him through some of Europe’s biggest dressing rooms.
He spent 2017-18 on loan at Inter Milan, then secured permanent switches to Juventus in 2018 and Manchester City in 2019. His time at City brought trophies and tactical reinvention, but also a series of loans as the squad evolved.
He finished the 2022-23 season at Bayern Munich on loan, then joined Barca for the 2023-24 campaign, again on a temporary deal from City. This latest agreement marks his third spell with the Spanish giants – and the first one not defined by a return ticket.
Barca double down with Rodri deal
Barcelona’s rebuild around established, technically gifted players has not stopped at Cancelo. The club also completed the signing of his former Manchester City team-mate Rodri this week, agreeing to pay about £65m for the Spain midfielder.
One comes for free, one for a hefty fee. Both arrive with Champions League pedigree and a clear idea of what it takes to dominate at the top level.
Cancelo has the move he calls a dream. Now he has three years to show what that dream looks like on the pitch.
