João Cancelo is back in Barcelona – this time to stay.

The Portuguese full-back has completed a free transfer from Al-Hilal, signing a permanent deal that ties him to Barça until June 30, 2029. After two impactful loan spells, the club have finally closed the circle on a player they have chased for years.

Barcelona’s announcement was short and decisive: an agreement with Cancelo, a free agent, and a contract through to 2029. No fee. No complications. Just a clear bet on a 32-year-old they trust to anchor one flank of Hansi Flick’s new-look side.

The route back to Catalonia, though, was anything but simple.

Cancelo revealed he had to tear up the comfort of his Al-Hilal contract to force the move. He trained alone for a week, waiting, pushing, insisting on one outcome.

“I’m very happy, I’m very pleased to be here, I’m where I want to be. I trained separately for a week. I told Deco that either I came here or I’d spend a year there without playing, still getting paid,” he said, laying bare the ultimatum he set.

“I gave up part of my salary, but it was either sign for Barça or nothing. It’s a very special club, I’m here to help and I hope to win many titles. We’re building a great team.”
