Joao Cancelo Returns to Barcelona Permanently
Joao Cancelo is a Barcelona player again – this time for good.
The Catalan club confirmed the Portuguese full-back’s return with a flurry of posts on its official X account, finally closing a drawn-out saga that has rumbled on through the summer. No more clauses, no more loan tweaks. A straight deal at last.
Cancelo has signed a three-year contract that ties him to Barcelona until 2029, a long-term commitment that underlines how firmly the club see him in their plans. Earlier reports had indicated he would arrive on a free after reaching an agreement with Al-Hilal to terminate his contract, with the player waiving the remainder of his dues to force through the move.
This is his third arrival at Barcelona, but the first time the relationship is permanent. He first landed in Catalonia on loan from Manchester City for the 2023-24 season, then returned on another temporary spell from Al-Hilal in the second half of last season. Each time, the question hovered: would Barça finally keep him? Now they have their answer.
On the pitch, Cancelo has already built a sizeable body of work in Blaugrana colours. Across a season and a half, he has played 65 matches in all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying nine assists. His attacking surges from full-back became a regular feature of Barcelona’s play, and he left his mark on their La Liga title win last season.
His departure closes a brief and curious chapter with Al-Hilal. Cancelo joined the Saudi club in the summer of 2024 and stayed for two seasons, but effectively played only one of them after being cut from the domestic squad last term. In that active season, he still managed 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring three times and creating 14 goals, yet finished his spell without a single trophy.
Back in Europe, he returns to a Barcelona side being aggressively reshaped. Cancelo is the club’s fifth signing of the window, following Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri and Jesse Bisiou, while the purchase option for young Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim has also been activated.
The rebuild has its headline full-back back in the fold. Now the question is simple: can this version of Cancelo, finally settled and signed, drive Barcelona through the next phase of their project?
