Jamie Carragher Reacts to Arsenal's Lewis-Skelly Sale Rumours

Jamie Carragher has admitted he “can’t believe” Arsenal would even entertain the idea of selling Myles Lewis-Skelly, as recent links with Chelsea and Manchester United are strongly knocked down.

Arsenal, fresh from winning the Premier League title, have been aggressive in this summer’s market. Christos Tzolis has arrived, Bruno Guimaraes is in the door, and Piero Hincapie’s move has been made permanent. Big, established names for a squad that already went the distance.

Against that backdrop came a jarring line of speculation: Lewis-Skelly, one of the brightest talents to emerge from the academy in recent years and impressive in midfield late last season, had supposedly been offered to Chelsea and United as part of Arsenal’s reshaping.

Carragher, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, could not get his head around it.

“That’s the thing that was a little bit strange about it,” he said. “It felt almost like Arsenal offered Manchester United Myles Lewis-Skelly.

“It wasn’t Myles Lewis-Skelly saying, I want to leave, or his people putting something out. That’s where the shock came from, not so much the players’ side of it.”

The former Liverpool defender then went back to the performances that shaped his opinion of the teenager. One night in particular still sticks.

“I still can’t believe it. Obviously, last season wasn’t great for him for the whole season, but when a young player has already put in performances like I’ve seen him put in at the Bernabeu – maybe over a year or 18 months ago, at left-back, he was running the game at the Bernabeu – and then his performance in the final in central midfield against Paris Saint-Germain.

“You can’t play at that level unless you’re pretty special at that age. All young players have ups and downs. Last season he didn’t play as much as he probably would have liked.

“But his ceiling is so high for the performances he’s already put in as a 20-year-old kid. I couldn’t believe that Arsenal would even think about letting him go. It does feel like a strange one.”

The shock from Carragher captured the mood of many who see Lewis-Skelly as a long-term pillar of Mikel Arteta’s project, not a bargaining chip.

Yet as the noise grew, the story started to unravel.

Reports that Arsenal had actively offered Lewis-Skelly to Chelsea and United have since been firmly rejected by multiple outlets. Caught Offside, The Athletic and the Daily Mail all reported that no such proposal had been made.

Mark Brus, writing for Caught Offside, went as far as to say he had repeatedly checked the claims.

“I’ve double and triple checked this with my sources today, and, as I suspect has already been reported elsewhere, there is no desire for Arsenal to sell Lewis-Skelly, nor does the player himself wish to leave,” he wrote.

“It’s been suggested that Chelsea and Man Utd have ‘rejected’ the 19-year-old, but that’s not accurate – you can’t reject a player who isn’t for sale and who isn’t looking for a move.”

So the picture is clearer. Arsenal are buying big, but they are not, at this stage, sacrificing one of their most gifted youngsters to do it. The question now is not who Lewis-Skelly might play for next, but how big a role he can carve out in a title-defending side stacked with midfield talent.
