Jack Clarke Shines in Ipswich Town's Premier League Return

Ipswich Town have thrown more than £100m at reshaping their squad this summer. On opening day, it was the one-time afterthought on the bench who made the decisive noise.

Jack Clarke, signed from Sunderland for £20m two years ago, watched the start of the Tractor Boys’ Premier League return from the sidelines. New manager Gary O'Neil, taking charge of his first competitive game since replacing Kieran McKenna in the summer, trusted seven of his new recruits from the off.

Ipswich, back in the top flight after their relegation two seasons ago, wanted to show they belong. They did it with fresh faces and, crucially, one familiar one.

Julio Enciso, brought in from Strasbourg for an undisclosed fee, lit the fuse. Pouncing on a sloppy pass from Luke O'Nien, he drove straight at the Sunderland defence, gliding past Dan Ballard before laying on Town’s first goal. It was the kind of aggressive, front-foot play that O’Neil has been preaching since he walked through the door.

Enciso’s work earned him the applause. Clarke’s late cameo earned Ipswich the game.

On 71 minutes, Enciso made way for Clarke. The script flipped. Sunderland, already guilty once in possession, repeated the error. Defender Omar Alderete saw his pass picked off and Clarke seized his moment, producing the flash of quality that settled the contest.

One interception. One burst of class. One reminder of why Ipswich spent big on him in the first place.

O’Neil’s new era begins with three points, a bench match-winner and a squad already looking deep. Next up is a different kind of test: League One Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night (19:45 BST), back at home, with selection headaches arriving sooner than expected.
