Inter Milan have reached an agreement to sign Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones in a deal worth $40 million, sources told The Athletic, ESPN and Sky Sports on Thursday, bringing an end to the 25-year-old’s long spell at Anfield.
The move closes the book on a senior Reds career that began in 2019 and stretched to 228 appearances. Jones had just one year left on his Liverpool contract, a detail that sharpened the urgency around his future and opened the door for Inter to move decisively.
A product of Liverpool’s academy and a symbol of the club’s recent homegrown push, Jones delivered 22 goals and 22 assists across those 228 games. In the 2025-26 campaign alone, he contributed three goals and three assists in 49 outings, a steady presence in a midfield that has been reshaped several times in recent seasons.
The clues were already there. Jones did not feature in Liverpool’s last two friendlies, both Sunday fixtures against Como and Monaco. With negotiations advancing in the background, his absence from those squads now looks less like rotation and more like preparation for departure.
For Liverpool, the timing is ruthless but logical: cashing in before a contract runs down, freeing space and funds in a crowded midfield, and avoiding the risk of losing a valuable asset for nothing next summer.
For Inter, it is a statement. The Nerazzurri, preparing to launch their Serie A campaign at home to Monza at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in Milan, are adding a versatile, press-resistant midfielder in his prime, with Champions League and Premier League experience already on his CV.
Liverpool, meanwhile, turn toward their own opening act. The Reds begin their Premier League season away to Newcastle at 11:30 a.m. EDT on Sunday in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, doing so without a player who has been part of their fabric for the better part of a decade.
One chapter closes at Anfield, another begins at San Siro. How quickly Jones bends Italian football to his rhythm will say plenty about Inter’s ambitions this season.
