Inter Milan Closing In On £30m Deal For Liverpool’s Jones

Inter Milan are moving fast and, this time, Liverpool are listening.

According to BBC Sport, the Italian champions are closing in on a deal worth around £30m for 25-year-old midfielder Jones, with talks between the clubs now into the final stretch. The broad framework is in place; only the finer details remain on the table as confidence grows in Italy that the move will be wrapped up soon.

Inter have not arrived late to this chase. They have circled Jones for months, only to be pushed back by Anfield’s hierarchy. In June, Liverpool rejected a verbal offer of £21.7m, holding out for closer to £35m for a player who still has a year left on his contract and carries valuable homegrown status.

The stalemate did not last. Weeks of dialogue have dragged the two clubs towards common ground, with the gap in valuation now significantly reduced. Inter’s willingness to edge towards the £30m mark has proved crucial, mirroring the package they recently committed to bring Djed Spence in from Tottenham.

Liverpool, for their part, have been consistent. They set their price early in the summer and refused to budge, insisting any sale must reflect Jones’s Premier League pedigree and the premium attached to homegrown talent. They remain open to a deal at the right figure, and that figure is now close.

This is not Inter’s first attempt to prise him away. During the January window they tested Liverpool’s resolve with a loan offer including an option to buy. That proposal was swiftly dismissed, with Liverpool then unwilling to weaken their midfield mid-season.

The landscape has shifted. For Jones, a switch to San Siro would draw a line under a long, deeply rooted spell on Merseyside. He joined Liverpool’s academy at nine, climbed through every level and eventually broke into the senior side under Jurgen Klopp in 2019. Since that debut he has pulled on the shirt 228 times, chipping in with a catalogue of eye-catching goals that underlined his technical quality and composure.

Yet last season carried a sharper edge. Jones featured 49 times in all competitions, but only 18 of those outings came as Premier League starts. He struggled to cement a permanent role in Arne Slot’s midfield structure, often caught between being trusted and being rotated.

Inside the club, there is no unanimous push to move him on. New head coach Andoni Iraola is understood to want him to stay, seeing value in his versatility and experience. But stalled contract talks have opened the door, and Jones’s appetite for a new challenge with Inter has grown as the summer has unfolded.

Now, with negotiations nearing a breakthrough and Inter finally close to Liverpool’s asking price, the question is no longer whether the Italian champions can tempt him away – it is how soon Jones will be walking out at San Siro in black and blue instead of Anfield in red.
