Inter Milan Eyes Liverpool's Chiesa After Curtis Jones Transfer
Inter Milan have already taken one Liverpool midfielder this week. They may not be finished yet.
Curtis Jones’ move to San Siro was wrapped up on Friday, a deal that could rise to £30 million and gives the 25-year-old a fresh start in Serie A. For Inter, it looks like the first part of a wider raid on Anfield rather than a one-off swoop.
Because the Italian champions are now circling Federico Chiesa.
From title winner to squad afterthought
Chiesa arrived at Liverpool in 2024 from Juventus for around £12.5m, a relatively modest fee for a Euro 2020 winner with his pedigree. The wages told a different story: a reported £150,000 per week for a player expected to make a serious impact on Merseyside.
It never really happened.
Yes, he has a Premier League winner’s medal. But his role in that triumph was peripheral, his Liverpool career reduced to flashes rather than full performances. A bit-part winger in a side moving in a new direction.
Preseason under Andoni Iraola has only underlined that reality. Chiesa has not convinced the new manager and, with Liverpool open to a sale at the right price, the door is wide open for a departure.
Inter plan for life after Luis Henrique
That opening may come from Milan. Inter are preparing to sell Brazilian forward Luis Henrique to Roma in a deal expected to reach around €25m. Once that move goes through, Cristian Chivu will need a replacement to keep his attacking options stacked for another title push.
Italian journalist Fabio Bergomi believes Inter have already picked their man.
“Chiesa could be the one who goes in place of Luis Henrique, if Luis Henrique accepts Roma, as seems to be the case,” Bergomi told his YouTube audience, suggesting the Liverpool winger is now high on Inter’s list.
“So I would narrow it down to Chiesa, because perhaps in the end they close Chiesa and he is plausible.”
The logic is clear: one versatile forward out, another in, with proven Serie A experience and a point to prove.
Injuries, doubts and a stalled Liverpool career
Chiesa’s Liverpool story under Arne Slot last season was stark in its simplicity. Two Premier League starts. No lasting impression. No real argument to stay ahead of rivals in the pecking order.
As Liverpool gear up for their season opener against Newcastle, Chiesa has been absent from training. That absence, though, is not linked to any transfer manoeuvring. It is understood to be down to yet another injury, the latest in a series of setbacks that have blunted his impact since leaving Juventus.
For Liverpool, that combination of high wages, limited minutes and recurring fitness issues makes a sale tempting. For Inter, it represents an opportunity: a cut-price gamble on a player who, at 28, should be in his prime.
Jones is already on the plane. The question now is whether Inter return to Anfield and complete a double raid by dragging Chiesa out of his stalled English adventure and back into the Serie A spotlight.
