Inter's Midfield Strategy: Frattesi's Exit and Jones' Arrival
Inter have locked in on one name to refresh their midfield this summer: Curtis Jones. Everything else is moving around that idea.
The Serie A champions have been biding their time, waiting for two things – outgoings in their own squad and a drop in Liverpool’s demands – before launching a full assault for the England midfielder. Now Lazio’s interest in Davide Frattesi might finally crack the door open.
Frattesi–Lazio Talks Light the Fuse
As reported by Fabrizio Romano (via SOSFanta), Inter and Lazio have opened talks over a deal for Frattesi built around a loan with a conditional obligation to buy. The structure suits all parties on paper. Lazio spread the cost, Inter protect the asset, and the player gets what he wants most: minutes.
Frattesi featured 33 times last season but started only a small portion of those games. For a midfielder in his prime years, that isn’t enough. He wants a bigger role, and he knows he’ll have to move to get it.
The pressure is now on Lazio. Inter will not simply hand over a key squad piece, especially to a club that has struggled to close deals in recent windows. Negotiations are underway, but they are unlikely to be straightforward.
Inter Ready to Strike for Jones
If Frattesi goes, Inter’s plan is clear: go straight back in for Jones.
The Nerazzurri are prepared to invest up to €35 million to bring the Liverpool midfielder to San Siro. Liverpool, though, are holding firm on a hefty asking price, even with Jones on a short-term contract. They know his value and are acting like it.
Jones, for his part, is open to the move. He has been handled carefully in pre-season, preserved rather than showcased, a detail that has not gone unnoticed in Italy. Inter see a technical, press-resistant midfielder who fits Simone Inzaghi’s system and their long-term core.
The problem is timing. Inter need the Frattesi situation to move first. Until then, they are circling rather than diving.
Lazio’s Gamble and a Touch of Irony
Per Alfredo Pedullà, Frattesi has been formally offered to Lazio by his agent, Giuseppe Riso, who also represents Mario Gila, Andrea Pinamonti, and Lorenzo Lucca. There is already a working channel with the capital club.
Lazio had previously weighed up a partial swap with Napoli, but Milan stepped in and snapped up the defensive target involved in that idea. Now, after missing out on Benfica’s Franjo Ivanovic, who is Lens-bound, they are refocusing on the Sassuolo product currently at Inter.
For Frattesi, Lazio would be close to perfect. He would walk in as a day-one starter in a side that badly needs energy and goals from midfield. The twist? His past with Roma would make the move sting across the city.
Still, Lazio’s recent transfer record raises a question: can they actually get it done? Identifying targets has not been the issue. Closing deals has.
A Chain Reaction Waiting to Happen
This is a classic Italian market domino. Frattesi’s future at Inter links directly to Jones’s future at Liverpool. Lazio’s ability to spend and structure a deal could end up deciding whether Inter land their primary midfield target.
For now, Inter wait, Lazio push, and Jones stays on standby. One move, and the whole chain could snap into place.
