Hull’s Lucas Herrington Shines in Shocking Win Over Manchester United
Lucas Herrington needed half an hour to announce himself to the Premier League. That was enough.
Thrown on for an injured teammate with Hull City clinging to a 2-0 lead over Manchester United, the 18-year-old Australian defender walked into a storm and never flinched. By full-time, the promoted side had a famous win, United were booed off, and a new Aussie storyline had begun.
Hull, tipped by many to go straight back down and even dismissed by former England star Joe Cole as “gone, man,” tore up the script in front of a raucous MKM Stadium. This wasn’t a smash-and-grab. It was controlled, disciplined, and fully deserved.
Hull bully United from set pieces
United, under Michael Carrick, looked slow and predictable from the outset. Hull looked anything but.
The breakthrough came on 17 minutes. United failed to clear a corner, and centre-back Semi Ajayi punished them, reacting quickest in the box to put Hull ahead. It was basic defending gone badly wrong for the visitors, and it set the tone.
United never really recovered their composure. Their build-up was ponderous, their attacking patterns easy to read. Hull smelled weakness and kept forcing the issue at dead-ball situations.
On 38 minutes, the pressure told again. Regan Slater whipped in a dangerous free kick, and Nobel Mendy — the central defender signed the same day as Herrington and preferred from the start — rose to glance a superb header past the keeper for 2-0.
The chant came instantly, rolling around the ground with relish: “Are you watching, Joe Cole?!”
Hull, written off as relegation fodder, were bullying Manchester United at set pieces and outworking them all over the pitch. The supposed mismatch had flipped.
Herrington’s moment
Mendy’s night ended abruptly in the 64th minute when injury forced him off. It could have unsettled Hull. Instead, it opened the door.
On came Lucas Herrington as part of a triple substitution, Australia’s most expensive teenager and fresh from Colorado Rapids. Barely 19 — 18 years and 351 days — he became the first Aussie teenager to feature in the Premier League since Harry Kewell, and the third youngest Australian ever to play in England’s top flight.
United were finally throwing bodies forward, if not ideas. Crosses, hopeful balls, heavy touches. Hull needed calm.
Herrington supplied it.
He only had nine touches, but every one of them looked assured. Simple passes. Clean clearances. No dives into rash challenges, no panic when red shirts swarmed his area. For a player billed as ice-cool under pressure, this was exactly that: a composed debut in the middle of a frantic finale.
United huffed and puffed. Hull’s back line, with Herrington now at its heart, held firm.
A famous win, and a door opens
When the whistle went, it marked Hull’s first league victory over Manchester United in 52 years and their first top-flight win after nine seasons away. Status Quo’s “Rocking All Over the World” blasted out as fans celebrated and owner Acun Ilicali revelled in the upset.
For Carrick, it was a nightmare opening to the campaign: a first ever Premier League defeat to Hull, and a performance that exposed slow build-up play and blunt attacking execution.
For Hull, it was something very different — a statement that they are not here to make up the numbers, and that their much-questioned recruitment might just have some steel behind the storylines.
There is a cost, though. Boss Sergej Jakirovic confirmed that Ajayi, Mendy and captain Lewie Coyle will all need assessment over the next 24 hours after picking up knocks. If any or all are sidelined, the next man up is obvious.
Herrington’s debut may be the start, not a cameo.
He is in line for more minutes in Tuesday’s League Cup tie away to Stoke City, and with a huge league trip to fellow promoted side Coventry City to follow — Coventry already bruised by a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal — Hull’s teenage Socceroo could find himself thrust even deeper into the Premier League spotlight.
