Hull City Break Transfer Record for Senegal Defender Mendy

Hull City have smashed their transfer record again, landing Senegal defender Mendy from Rayo Vallecano in a deal that underlines their determination to make a serious impact on their Premier League return.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract at the MKM Stadium, with the club holding an option for an extra year, tying one of Europe’s most highly regarded young defenders to East Yorkshire for the long term.

Club officials have kept the exact fee under wraps but confirmed it surpasses the figure paid for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who arrived from Olympiacos earlier this month for more than £20 million plus add-ons. That record barely had time to settle before Hull tore it up again.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” he told the club’s media, unable to hide his delight.

He described himself as “a very athletic player” and “a defender at heart”, stressing his appetite for playing out from the back with composure but stepping in aggressively when the moment demands it. The Premier League, he said, is the challenge he has wanted “since I was little” — and he insists he is ready.

Hull are banking on more than potential. Mendy arrives with serious experience for his age. In his single La Liga season with Rayo Vallecano he played 28 times and chipped in with two goals, underlining that he is not just a stopper but a threat in the opposition box as well.

His European pedigree is striking. Mendy has reached the Conference League final in each of the last two seasons. This year he went all the way with Rayo Vallecano before losing to Crystal Palace. The season before, he was part of the Real Betis squad that marched to the showpiece, only to fall short against Chelsea. Two finals, two defeats, both against Premier League opposition — and a crash course in the level he will now face every week.

That exposure to English clubs on the continental stage means Hull are getting a defender who already understands the intensity and precision demanded at the top end of the game.

His rise has not gone unnoticed at international level either. Mendy made his senior debut for Senegal in March, featuring for the Teranga Lions against The Gambia and reinforcing his status as one of West Africa’s most exciting young defenders.

He becomes Hull City’s eighth signing of the summer window as the newly promoted side reshape their squad for the step up. The Tigers are edging towards the start line now, their recruitment drive nearly complete, and a daunting opener at home to Manchester United on August 22 looming into view.

By then, Hull will expect their new record signing to be at the heart of it all.
