Hull City Break Transfer Record to Sign Nobel Mendy
Hull City have torn up their transfer history to land Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.
The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with the option of a further year, becoming the most expensive player in the club’s history. Hull have not disclosed the fee, but confirmed it eclipses the £20m plus add-ons they paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos.
That figure had only just replaced a record that stood untouched since 2016, when Hull spent £13m to bring Ryan Mason from Tottenham. Now Mendy sits at the top of that list.
“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” Mendy said after completing the move. “I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.
“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”
A rapid rise
Mendy’s path to this record-breaking switch has been sharp and steep.
He came through at Paris FC before earning his move to Spain, where a single La Liga season with Rayo Vallecano was enough to put him on the radar of Premier League clubs. He scored twice in 28 appearances in that campaign and ended it on one of European football’s biggest new stages, starting in the Conference League final defeat to Crystal Palace.
The year before, he had already sampled that same stage with Real Betis, reaching the Conference League final only to lose to Chelsea. Two European finals, two different clubs, before his 22nd birthday: Hull are buying a defender who already knows what it is to walk out under real pressure.
On the international front, Mendy made his Senegal debut in March against The Gambia, earning his first cap for the African champions.
Now comes the next leap. From Paris FC to La Liga, from European finals to a club willing to bet its future on his potential. Hull have paid more than ever before to secure him.
