Hartlepool Faces Double Injury Blow with Merrick and Kouogun Out

Hartlepool United’s early-season momentum has been checked by a brutal double injury setback, with goalkeeper Max Merrick ruled out for six weeks and defender Max Kouogun facing up to three months on the sidelines.

Merrick, on loan from Chelsea, limped out of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Woking shortly after the half-hour mark with a thigh problem and has now returned to his parent club for treatment.

Manager Darren Clark confirmed the diagnosis after scans were assessed by Chelsea’s medical staff.

“He’s got a thigh tear, so he’ll be out for six weeks,” Clark told BBC Radio Tees, explaining that Merrick had gone straight back to Stamford Bridge to make use of the Premier League side’s elite facilities. Hartlepool are in daily contact with the 21-year-old as he begins his recovery and are expecting him to rejoin the squad once he nears a return to action.

The blow in goal is compounded by bad news at the back.

Kouogun, who landed awkwardly in the defeat at Eastleigh in August, has suffered ankle ligament damage and will be out for a minimum of two months. The club are now waiting on specialist advice to determine whether surgery is required, which could extend his absence to around three months.

“We’re going to see a consultant to see whether it needs surgery,” Clark said. “If that would be the case, that would take up to three months. So that’s a big blow for us because Max is a big player for us in every sense of the word.”

The pressure on Hartlepool’s squad depth is immediate.

Merrick’s injury opened the door for summer signing Nathan Fisher, who came off the bench against Woking and is now in line to start Friday night’s fixture against Kidderminster Harriers (19:45 BST). His promotion to the No.1 spot would see player/goalkeeping coach Adam Smith step up as the back-up keeper.

Behind the scenes, Clark is already exploring ways to ease the strain. He is set for talks with head of football operations Chris Maxwell, of club advisors Bromby & Partners, over the possibility of bringing in short-term cover while Merrick recovers.
