Harry Kane has drawn a firm line under one of the Premier League’s longest-running fantasies: a grand homecoming to chase down Alan Shearer’s record and rescue a giant in need. For now, it isn’t happening.
The Bayern Munich striker, still operating at the peak of his powers and widely regarded as one of the game’s elite No 9s alongside Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, has made clear he no longer feels the pull of England in the way he once did.
United, Spurs… and a door quietly closing
Manchester United and Tottenham had both been weighing up a move for Kane this summer, with the logic obvious on each side.
United’s rebuild under new co-ownership, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe an open admirer of Kane, has left them searching for a reliable, world-class finisher. Tottenham, under Roberto De Zerbi, have never fully replaced the certainty of Kane’s goals and had kept the possibility of a sensational reunion alive.
Spurs made it known they would love to explore bringing back their record goalscorer. The emotional lure was obvious. Kane left north London with 213 Premier League goals, within striking distance of Shearer’s 260 and ahead of Wayne Rooney’s 208 in the all-time list.
The story almost wrote itself: Kane returns, hunts down Shearer, leads either United or Spurs back to the top table. But that script is being quietly shredded in Munich.
Bayern, Europe and a new comfort zone
Since leaving Tottenham for Bayern in 2023, Kane has done exactly what Bayern signed him to do: rip through defences.
He has terrorised Bundesliga backlines and translated that dominance to Europe, scoring 33 goals in 38 Champions League appearances for the German champions. The move hasn’t dulled his edge; it has broadened his horizons.
There were even surprise talks between his camp and Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, a reminder of how desirable he remains on the global market. Yet transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has reported that the most likely outcome is far simpler: Kane signing fresh terms at Bayern.
The striker himself has now underlined why that scenario makes sense.
Speaking after receiving the European Golden Shoe, in quotes carried by journalist Henry Winter, Kane laid out his thinking.
“When I first left, for sure it was something that I thought I’d definitely be coming back. That itch isn’t there as much anymore,” he said.
“I’m extremely happy here in Munich. It’s opened my eyes to a totally different world of football outside of England. It’s made me appreciate European football even more.
“With the team we have here, with the manager (Vincent Kompany). My family are really settled here. It’s just about being in the best place possible.
“I never say never but, for now, I’m concentrating on Bayern Munich and we’ll see what the future holds.”
The record that might never fall
Those words land heavily back in England. Shearer’s Premier League record suddenly looks a little safer.
Kane walked away from the division on 213 goals, 47 short of the mark many assumed he would eventually surpass. For years, any conversation about his future came with an asterisk: he’ll be back to finish the job.
Now that “itch” has faded. Bayern, under Kompany, are being built around him. His family is settled. The football is different, and he likes it. The Premier League’s gravitational pull, once irresistible, has loosened.
Kane has left the door fractionally ajar with his “never say never” caveat. But the message is clear. He is not chasing a move. Not to Manchester United. Not back to Tottenham. Not anywhere in England.
If the Premier League wants to see Harry Kane again, it may have to settle for European nights and television replays of what he used to do on its pitches, while the record he once seemed destined to break starts to look like a monument he has chosen to walk past.
