Hansi Flick's Demands at Barcelona: Building a Stronger Squad
Hansi Flick is not easing his way into life at Barcelona. Not on the pitch, and certainly not in the transfer market.
Even with a headline-grabbing agreement in place for Manchester City midfielder Rodri in a deal worth around £65 million, the German coach has made it clear he is still waiting for more reinforcements before the window shuts.
“I think we need a few more players,” he said, blunt and unapologetic, in an interview with the club’s internal media. For a club that has just pushed hard to land one of Europe’s most complete midfielders, it was a pointed reminder: this rebuild is only getting started.
Big win, bigger demands
Flick’s comments came after a 5-2 win over Basel at St. Jakob's Park, a friendly that felt anything but soft around the edges. Barcelona scored five, showed flashes of fluency, and still walked away with a manager insisting they are far from the finished article.
Lamine Yamal returned to the side and wasted no time reintroducing himself, calmly converting from the penalty spot in his first outing since lifting the World Cup with Spain. The teenager’s presence alone lifted the tempo, but Flick refused to get carried away by the scoreline.
“It was a good test for us; Basel played well,” he reflected. “It wasn’t easy playing against them. Perhaps in the first half we didn’t play as quickly as we’d have liked, either in terms of positioning or off the ball. That’s what we need to improve on. We’ve got potential, and I’m pleased with the test.”
That balance summed him up: satisfied, but never comfortable. Five goals away from home, yet the focus immediately turned to tempo, structure, and the gaps that still need closing.
Training standards and quiet optimism
If the match left him wanting more, the work behind closed doors is clearly hitting the right level.
“The most important thing is how we train, the quality and the intensity, and that’s very good,” Flick said. “I can see the standard of the team and that’s what matters most. We’ll analyse this match and also the training sessions. And we’ve got a match this week, so we’ll see.”
The message is consistent. Results in pre-season matter, but only as evidence of habits being built from Monday to Friday. Flick is leaning heavily on training ground standards as the foundation for what he hopes will become a ruthless, modern Barcelona side.
Managing minutes, eye on Elche
The win in Switzerland also underlined the juggling act Flick faces as the domestic season looms. Some of his key players have only just returned from international duty, and the coaching staff are clearly walking a tightrope between sharpening them up and overloading them.
“Some players arrived five days ago and we have to prepare for the match against Elche; we have to think about who can start, who can play the full ninety minutes, and we can only make five substitutions,” he explained. “All of this influences how we want to manage this match.”
Every minute on the pitch is being calculated against the demands of a long season to come. The Basel friendly was less a casual run-out and more a carefully controlled stress test.
New faces make their mark
If Rodri’s impending arrival hints at a new core being built, the night in Basel also showcased the layers beneath it.
Karim Adeyemi struck first, finishing off a move created by Raphinha. It was the sort of direct, incisive combination that Flick has long valued: pace, timing, and a clean end product.
Then came the cameo that stole the headlines. Teenage signing Jesse Bisiwu came off the bench and helped himself to a late brace, turning a strong outing into a statement one. For a squad Flick insists is still too thin for a season fighting on multiple fronts, those contributions from the fringes matter.
The coach remains upbeat about the group’s direction, but the warning is unmistakable. Even with Rodri on the way, even with youngsters like Yamal and Bisiwu flashing their potential, Flick does not yet see a squad built to withstand the grind of league, Europe, and domestic cups.
Barcelona have made a major move in the market. Their new manager is already demanding the next one.
