Gavin Bazunu Joins Bolton Wanderers: A New Chapter Begins
Gavin Bazunu has drawn a line under his Southampton stint and dropped into a new chapter with Bolton Wanderers, signing a three-year deal with the Championship club.
The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland goalkeeper arrives at the Toughsheet Community Stadium in search of something simple but increasingly rare in his career: a guaranteed run of games.
Once tipped as Southampton’s long-term No 1 after his move from Manchester City in 2022, Bazunu saw that vision fade. He featured 19 times in the Championship last season but slid down the pecking order at St Mary’s, his trajectory disrupted by competition and circumstance.
The second half of the 2025-26 campaign underlined that frustration. A loan to Stoke City, meant to reboot his season, instead became stop-start as injuries bit. Before that, Southampton had sent him to Standard Liege in Belgium’s top flight, another short spell that never quite turned into a permanent home.
Now comes Bolton. A club with history, expectation and a clear target: get back to where they believe they belong.
Bazunu made it clear why he chose them, speaking to Wanderers TV after the move for an undisclosed fee.
"It's obviously a club with massive history. I see it as a place where I can come and progress my personal career, while helping the team with their ambitions of getting back to where they belong," he said, framing the switch as both a personal reset and a promotion mission.
His focus is sharp, almost stripped back.
"I want to get back to being in a position where I’m playing week in, week out and enjoying my football again. My big aim and ambition here is to play as many games as I can and show my levels.
"I’m excited to be here and excited for what’s to come. I’m sure all the other new signings will have said the same thing, but we’re excited to get going, show our qualities and show where this team belongs."
For Ireland, the move matters too. Bazunu has 22 senior caps, but his international momentum has stalled. His last appearance came in March 2024 in a friendly against Switzerland, with his most recent call-up under Heimir Hallgrimsson arriving in November of that year.
Regular football in the Championship, in a side pushing hard, is the quickest way to get back into that conversation.
For Bolton, it’s a statement that they trust him to anchor a promotion push. For Bazunu, it’s a clean slate in a league he already knows – and a chance to prove that his best years in goal are still in front of him, not filed away in what-ifs at St Mary’s.
