Galatasaray Pursues Rafael Leao as Milan Lowers Demands
Galatasaray have circled back to Rafael Leao, sensing an opening as Milan quietly edge down their demands for the Portuguese forward.
Sources in both Italy and Turkiye report that talks between the clubs have resumed and are described as “intensive”, even if the negotiation is still at a delicate stage. For now, there is no formal, written offer on Milan’s desk. Everything remains at the level of discussions, numbers floated, scenarios explored.
The situation has shifted because Milan’s stance has shifted. Earlier in the summer, the Rossoneri were holding out for around €50m plus €10m in add-ons. That figure scared off potential suitors. No club came close to matching it, and the lack of concrete bids has forced Milan to reassess what is realistic in this market.
That hesitation elsewhere has dragged Galatasaray back into the frame.
Blocked on Martinelli, Gala turn to Leao
Galatasaray’s renewed interest in Leao comes straight after a failed move for Gabriel Martinelli. The Turkish giants saw a €45m offer rejected by Arsenal, who not only turned down the bid but also made it clear the Brazilian had no intention of moving to Istanbul.
With that door slammed shut, attention swung back to Milan and to a player who has been on Galatasaray’s radar for some time. Leao, still only in his mid-twenties and with Champions League pedigree, fits the profile of the marquee signing the club want to drop into their attack.
They are not alone. Benfica and Fenerbahce have also sounded out Milan over Leao in recent weeks. Yet none of those enquiries ever crystallised into a written proposal. The gap between what Milan were asking and what those clubs were prepared to pay was simply too wide.
Now the numbers are changing. Reports suggest Milan are prepared to listen at figures potentially below €50m plus add-ons. That shift has dragged the conversation into a more realistic zone for Galatasaray and others.
Big-league move never arrived
Leao and Milan had both expected a different kind of summer. Once it became clear that the player was open to a move, there was an assumption that one of the heavyweights from Europe’s top five leagues would pounce.
That swoop never came.
Interest from the biggest clubs failed to materialise in any concrete way, leaving Milan dealing mainly with offers and conversations from outside the traditional power leagues. For a player who has shown flashes of elite-level talent, it is a telling market verdict.
Contract clock ticking at San Siro
The contractual reality is ruthless. Leao’s deal at San Siro runs until June 2028. There is, according to reports, no appetite on the player’s side to extend that agreement. Milan know exactly what that means: delay too long and the leverage shifts, the fee shrinks, and a major asset edges towards a cut-price exit.
That is why a sale this summer now looks close to inevitable. The only real questions are where he goes and how far Milan are willing to bend on the final fee.
For Galatasaray, this is an opportunity that rarely appears: a prime-age, Champions League-tested winger, available at a reduced price compared to earlier demands. For Milan, it is a test of nerve and valuation in a market that has already told them once that their opening price was too high.
