Galatasaray's Ambitious Move for Bruno Fernandes

Galatasaray are attempting one of the boldest moves of the summer: a double-pronged push to prise Bruno Fernandes away from Manchester United.

The Turkish champions, buoyed by another Super Lig title and a growing sense of ambition in Europe, are readying a package that hits hard on two fronts – fee and wages.

Galatasaray’s big swing

According to reports from The Telegraph and Ben Jacobs, Galatasaray plan to table a €50m (£42.8m) offer to United for their captain, while putting a four-year deal on the table for Fernandes himself.

This is not a token approach. It is a statement.

Club president Dursun Özbek is described as “determined” to land the Portuguese playmaker, with Galatasaray understood to be willing to hand him a contract worth €21m (£18.3m) net per year, plus a €4m signing-on bonus. Thanks to Turkey’s favourable tax regime, that package would effectively double his current take-home pay at Old Trafford.

For a 31-year-old entering the final phase of his peak years, it is the kind of offer that makes any player pause.

Contract ticking down

The timing is no accident. Fernandes is into the final 12 months of his current United deal, believed to be worth around £200,000 a week, although the club hold an option to extend it by a further year.

A previous £57m release clause in his contract has already expired. That safety net gone, United now face a more delicate situation: an ageing but still elite talisman, a contract running down, and major clubs circling.

Saudi Arabia moved first. Al-Hilal tried to tempt Fernandes last summer with huge wages, only to be rebuffed. He chose to stay, to captain United, to chase more major honours in England and Europe.

Now Galatasaray are testing that resolve.

United’s stance: not for sale

Despite the size of the proposed offer and the financial lure for the player, the message from Old Trafford is firm.

The Telegraph, BBC Sport and Jacobs all report that United have no intention of selling Fernandes this summer, regardless of the size of any bid. Club officials view him as central to Michael Carrick’s plans and a cornerstone of the rebuild they hope will drag United back towards the top of the Premier League and deep into the Champions League.

TEAMtalk also reported last week that United are set on keeping their captain for the coming season, even as interest gathers from abroad.

Fernandes’ loyalty – for now

The player’s position aligns with the club’s. BBC Sport report that Fernandes’ priority is to remain at Old Trafford. He is described as fiercely loyal to United, conscious that he could earn far more elsewhere but still convinced he has more to deliver in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

The long term is a different conversation. At 31, with one big contract likely left at the very highest level, the prospect of a final, lucrative move – whether to Turkey, Saudi Arabia or another emerging destination – will inevitably loom larger as the seasons pass and negotiations drag on.

For now, though, United hold their ground, Fernandes stays put, and Galatasaray wait to see if their audacious offer can crack a bond that, to this point, has held firm.
