FIFA Revises World Cup Bottle Ban for Fan Comfort

Fifa has rowed back on part of its controversial World Cup bottle ban, allowing fans to bring sealed disposable water bottles into stadiums after a backlash over supporter welfare.

The governing body had triggered anger with a late change to its safety policy, which outlawed all bottles, along with cups, jars and cans, on security grounds. The move was slammed by fan groups, who questioned how supporters were expected to cope in packed arenas without affordable access to drinking water.

Under pressure, Fifa has now drawn a clearer line.

Only hard-sided reusable containers will be barred at World Cup 2026 venues. Soft, single-use plastic bottles are back on the approved list.

"Each spectator can bring with them one 20 ounce (560ml) soft, plastic disposable factory-sealed water bottle into the stadium," said World Cup 2026 chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi, setting out the revised stance.

The message from organisers is blunt on what will not make it past security.

"What is not allowed are hard-sided resealable water containers, which could pose a safety and security risk."

The compromise leaves Fifa trying to balance two modern demands that rarely sit comfortably together: tighter security and basic fan comfort on football’s biggest stage.
