Fenerbahce Denies Transfer Rumors for Chelsea Winger Jamie Gittens
Fenerbahce have moved swiftly and angrily to crush rumours linking them with a move for Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, branding the speculation “completely unfounded”.
Reports had suggested the Turkish giants were weighing up a summer swoop for the 22-year-old, just a year after his big-money arrival in the Premier League. The noise grew loud enough on social media for the Istanbul club to feel compelled to step in – and they did so with force.
Fenerbahce hit back
In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, Fenerbahce flatly rejected any suggestion they are pursuing Gittens.
“Reports circulating in some media outlets today regarding our club's interest in Chelsea FC player Jamie Gittens are completely unfounded and do not reflect the truth,” the club declared.
They went further, accusing unnamed parties of trying to drag the club into manufactured transfer sagas.
“We once again clearly state that attempts to manipulate Fenerbahçe Sports Club through false transfer claims and artificially created agendas will have no effect.
“Fenerbahçe conducts its sporting structure, transfer policy, and future planning in all branches, especially football, in accordance with its own strategy, needs, and established programs.
“Therefore, we expect this approach of using our club's name to create public opinion and steer Fenerbahçe towards certain directions to cease.”
The message was as much for their own supporters as it was for the wider market.
“Our sole focus right now is our match against Gençlerbirliği in the first week of the Trendyol Super League.
“We respectfully request that our great Fenerbahçe fans disregard such unfounded news and continue their support for our teams only by considering the statements made through our club's official channels.”
Rumours killed. Attention, they insist, back on the pitch.
Gittens’ stop-start Chelsea story
For Gittens, the storm around his name comes at a delicate stage of his Chelsea career.
Signed from Borussia Dortmund for a total fee of £51.5 million, the English winger arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer carrying a heavy price tag and high expectations. His first campaign never really caught fire.
