Sources have told TEAMtalk the Chelsea midfielder is “very keen” on making the move to the Etihad this summer, and those close to the talks believe a deal at around £100million is there to be done — if City act fast.
Chelsea’s current asking price sits at £120m, but there is growing confidence that a compromise £100m fee could unlock an agreement. For a player the Blues signed from Benfica for £107m in 2023 and who has since become a key figure at Stamford Bridge, it would still be a huge sale.
From Chelsea linchpin to City target
Fernandez has quickly grown into a central pillar in west London and for Argentina, yet the chance to join Enzo Maresca’s City project is viewed as an enticing next step in his career. City have been tracking his situation and are now exploring whether they can strike a deal at that lower valuation.
TEAMtalk reported on Tuesday that City are ready to move for the 25-year-old, but only if Rodri leaves. Barcelona remain in talks to take the Spaniard to Camp Nou, a scenario that would rip a hole in City’s midfield and make Fernandez an immediate priority.
City are also closing in on Monaco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi in a deal worth over £85m. That move is not expected to derail their pursuit of Fernandez, though; the Argentine is seen as a separate opportunity at the very top end of the market.
Chelsea lay down the terms
Chelsea, however, are not prepared to let this drag on. With pre-season plans under new manager Xabi Alonso already under way, the club have told City in clear terms: submit a formal offer soon or forget about signing Fernandez.
The message from the Chelsea hierarchy is simple. They do not want a long, messy transfer saga overshadowing a crucial preparation period. Alonso wants clarity — either build around Fernandez or move on without the noise of ongoing negotiations.
Inside the club, there is an acceptance that £100m still represents a substantial return for a player who has delivered consistently in the Premier League and on the international stage. But they will not allow the process to run into the final weeks of the window and risk unsettling both the player and the dressing room.
City on the clock
City now have a decision to make. They know Fernandez brings proven quality and room to grow, and they know the price — a compromise figure, but still a major outlay. The question is whether they believe he justifies that investment, especially with Rodri’s future unresolved and Bouaddi already on the way.
Both clubs feel the squeeze of the calendar. Chelsea want to lock in their squad and give Alonso a settled group. City must decide whether to push for a marquee midfield signing before the market moves on and other options close.
For the moment, the initiative belongs to City. If they come forward quickly with a bid in the region of £100m, people close to the negotiations believe Chelsea will do business.
If they hesitate, the door is expected to slam shut — and Enzo Fernandez will be lining up at Stamford Bridge when the new season kicks off, rather than walking out at the Etihad in sky blue.
