Enzo Fernández Left Out as Chelsea Future Heats Up

Enzo Fernández’s Chelsea saga has flared up again. This time, it was not a rumour, not a whisper from the market, but a team sheet. His name was missing.

For the Carabao Cup second-round tie against Luton, Xabi Alonso chose to leave the Argentine midfielder out of the squad entirely, a call the Chelsea manager insisted was his and his alone.

“The decision not to call him up was mine,” Alonso said after the win, keen to stamp his authority on the issue before the speculation spiralled any further.

Sporting call or transfer signal?

Fernández had already made it clear before the summer that he wanted to leave Stamford Bridge. That desire has never really left the background. Now, with the transfer window ticking towards its close, every move around him is being read as a clue.

In England, reports suggest Manchester City are weighing up a bid for the World Cup winner before the deadline. Against that backdrop, his omission from a cup squad was never going to pass quietly.

Alonso, though, tried to frame it strictly in football terms. No punishment, no falling-out. Just rotation.

“It was simply because of today’s match. We have other players who need minutes,” he explained. Asked when he had made the call, he did not hesitate: “Wednesday afternoon. It was a decision I made myself.”

Alonso backs Enzo’s professionalism

If the decision raised eyebrows, Alonso moved quickly to protect his midfielder’s image inside and outside the dressing room.

“Enzo is a good professional. He is training well and I have nothing to say about that,” he stressed, repeating the point to shut down any suggestion of poor attitude or a standoff on the training ground.

For now, the message from the bench is that this was about managing minutes and tailoring the squad to the demands of a specific cup tie. No more, no less. At least officially.

All eyes on Sunday

The next marker comes fast. Chelsea host Brighton in the league at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and Alonso left the door wide open for Fernández to walk straight back through it.

“They are simply decisions we have to make with the match we were playing tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday,” he said.

If Enzo is back in the squad, the noise may quieten, if only briefly. If he is not, the temperature around his future — and Manchester City’s interest — will rise again, and this time it will be impossible to call it just a “sporting decision” without the questions getting louder.
