The split reaction did not come from nowhere. For a support that has already endured upheaval and underachievement, talk of a key player eyeing the exit has not gone down well.

Fernández had already fuelled controversy earlier in the summer when he publicly spoke about his desire to play for Real Madrid one day. Those comments had consequences: he was left out of the squad for two matches, a clear signal that the club did not appreciate the distraction.

Now the transfer market has added another twist. Manchester City have moved into the frame for Fernández in recent days, with the Premier League champions monitoring his situation as uncertainty surrounds Rodri, who has been linked with a possible move to Barcelona. At City, one of his leading admirers would be a familiar face: Enzo Maresca, his former Chelsea coach, is known to rate him highly.
