A year on, Spain is wondering if he’s already been overtaken.
Dumfries grabs the shirt
Jose Mourinho’s return to the Bernabeu has changed the landscape on the right side of Real’s defence. One of his first moves was decisive: Denzel Dumfries in from Inter Milan for £17.1m (€20m). A specialist, powerful, defensively reliable.
On his La Liga debut, Dumfries did exactly what Mourinho bought him to do. Strong in duels, aggressive in his positioning, and relentless in his running. Alexander-Arnold, by contrast, watched most of the 2-1 win over Espanyol from the bench and only entered the pitch in the 80th minute.
Spanish media did not miss the symbolism.
Marca: Dumfries ‘far superior defensively’
Marca handed Alexander-Arnold a 5/10, explaining he was introduced because Real needed “much more in attack.” It was hardly a stinging criticism, but it was a long way from a ringing endorsement.
The real story, in their eyes, was Dumfries. Their assessment of the Dutchman cut to the heart of Alexander-Arnold’s problem. Dumfries, they wrote, “goes all out and takes down Dolan. He lowered his center of gravity, stuck out his leg, and the interception was top-class. Defensively, he's a marvel. He's replaced by Trent in the 80th minute. A good league game from the Dutchman. Far superior defensively... but a bit more lost in attack, although he tried throughout."
That contrast – defensive “marvel” versus attacking substitute – frames the battle for Mourinho’s trust.
AS: Dumfries ahead in the pecking order
AS painted a similar picture. Alexander-Arnold, they felt, was sent on to “try and find Espi” with his crossing, but he was “hardly involved” and failed to influence the game as hoped.
Their verdict on Dumfries will concern the England international more than his own rating. AS were clear: Dumfries started the first league game of the season and is “ahead of Trent in the pecking order.”
They argued the Dutchman is justifying that status: “he's intense defensively and, above all, he attacks with great enthusiasm.” With Arda Güler drifting inside from the wing, AS highlighted how vital it was for the right-back to drive forward and stretch Espanyol down the flank. Dumfries did exactly that, making “several dangerous runs” into the box and standing firm in key defensive moments late on.
Alexander-Arnold, by comparison, was a late tactical tweak, not the pillar of the right side.
Mundo Deportivo: Mourinho’s preference is clear
Mundo Deportivo went a step further, tying the situation directly to Mourinho’s long-term planning. In their view, the coach “prefers Dumfries” and specifically signed him this summer as the “replacement” in the starting XI.
Alexander-Arnold, they suggested, is now viewed as an “alternate” – a different type of option when Mourinho wants to change the dynamic of a game rather than control it from the start.
For a player who made 36 appearances last season and supplied seven assists despite missing 22 matches with muscle and hamstring issues, that is a sharp comedown.
Sport: A different role for Trent?
Sport echoed the idea that Dumfries has “won the starting spot” battle for now, but left more room for nuance. They stressed that Alexander-Arnold’s role “depends” on what Mourinho wants from his team this season.
Unlike other outlets, Sport were more complimentary about his cameo, noting he was “trying to get involved” and “provide quality” for Carlos Espi. They also floated a familiar idea to anyone who followed his final years at Liverpool: Alexander-Arnold could be “more effective” centrally.
That line hints at a possible solution. If Mourinho decides to reshape his system, the 27-year-old might yet be reimagined as an interior player, stepping into midfield rather than battling Dumfries head-on for the right-back slot.
For now, though, the view from Spain is blunt. Dumfries has the shirt. Alexander-Arnold has the questions.
