Djed Spence Joins Inter Milan for £25.6m
Inter Milan have completed the signing of England right-back Djed Spence from Tottenham, landing the defender on a five-year deal as the Serie A champions continue to reshape their squad with Premier League pedigree.
The Italian giants are understood to be paying around 30m euros (£25.6m) for the 26-year-old, who becomes the second England international to walk through the doors at San Siro this summer after John Stones arrived on a free following the expiry of his Manchester City contract.
For Spence, the move had felt inevitable long before the paperwork was finalised. Earlier on Saturday he effectively said his goodbyes, posting an emotional farewell to Spurs supporters across his social media channels.
“A special chapter comes to an end,” he wrote. “It's been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I'll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao.
“Thanks to all the staff members who've helped me along the way, the players who've become family and most importantly thank you to the fans. Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart.”
That “new chapter” takes him back to Italy, a country he already knows from a six‑month loan spell at Genoa in 2024. This time, though, he arrives as a World Cup regular and a marquee signing for the reigning champions.
Spence’s stock has risen sharply over the past two years. He featured in all eight of England’s matches at the World Cup, a tournament in which Thomas Tuchel’s side battled their way to a third-place finish and leaned heavily on his energy down the flank.
At club level, he remained a central figure for Tottenham last season. Spence made 44 appearances in all competitions during the 2025-26 campaign, an ever-present in a side that continued to evolve under Roberto de Zerbi.
The landscape at Spurs has shifted quickly. First-choice right-back Pedro Porro committed his future to the club with a new contract in June, while Andy Robertson’s arrival from Liverpool has added heavyweight competition on the opposite flank. With both full-back positions suddenly crowded, the path for Spence narrowed.
De Zerbi had been open about his desire to keep the defender, saying in July that he wanted to convince Spence to stay in north London. The club, though, faced a decision: double down on a stacked defensive line or cash in on a valuable asset entering his prime years. Inter’s offer answered that question.
Spence leaves Tottenham having grown from promising recruit to European trophy winner. Signed from Middlesbrough in 2022 for an initial £12.5m, he went on to make 85 appearances for the club and played his part in their 2024-25 Europa League triumph, a landmark moment in Spurs’ modern history.
Now he swaps the roar of north London for the glare of San Siro, joining an Inter side that already boasts a strong English core with Stones on board. The fee, the contract length, the World Cup exposure — everything points to a defender arriving not as a squad option, but as a cornerstone.
Tottenham move on with Porro and Robertson locked in. Inter move forward with Spence.
The real question now is simple: how far can he push his game in a league that has made a habit of sharpening the world’s best defenders?
