Djed Spence Joins Inter Milan After Tottenham Exit
Djed Spence touched down in Milan late on Thursday, stepping into the arrivals hall to a wall of cameras and excited Inter fans, knowing his turbulent Tottenham chapter is all but over.
The 26-year-old is in Italy to complete a blockbuster move to Inter, with his medical booked for Friday and only routine checks now standing between him and a new life at San Siro.
Inter land their Dumfries replacement
Inter and Tottenham have thrashed out a deal worth an initial €31.5 million (£27m), according to TuttoMercato, with performance-related bonuses pushing the total package towards €35m (£30m). Spurs have also protected themselves with a ten per cent sell-on clause, a nod to the belief that Spence’s value can still climb.
Inter’s interest didn’t come out of nowhere. They have been scouring the market for a high-profile replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who left for Real Madrid in early July. Spence’s summer changed everything.
The full-back produced a breakout 2026 World Cup with England, playing a major role as the Three Lions battled their way to the third-place play-off against France. Those performances, on the biggest stage of all, convinced Inter to move decisively rather than risk losing him to a rival.
Personal terms were never a problem. Spence quickly reached an agreement with the Italian giants, clearing the way for the clubs to finalise the fee and structure.
Blocked at Spurs, reborn in Serie A?
For Tottenham, this is the end of a four-year stint that never quite settled. Spence made 85 senior appearances and leaves with a Europa League winners’ medal, but his route to regular football in north London had effectively vanished.
Pedro Porro has just signed a lucrative new contract as first-choice right-back. Andy Robertson has arrived to strengthen the opposite flank. Minutes for a versatile full-back suddenly looked scarce.
New Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi read the landscape and did not stand in his way, approving a permanent exit that also helps reshape a squad scarred by last season’s trauma.
Spence featured 44 times in a campaign that almost ended in disaster, with Tottenham only securing their Premier League status on the final day. The move to Inter doesn’t just feel like a transfer; it feels like an escape from a club wrestling with its own identity.
A return to familiar ground
Italy will not be completely new territory. Spence previously spent six months on loan at Genoa in 2024, an important spell that introduced him to the tactical demands and intensity of Serie A. That experience should smooth his transition into Simone Inzaghi’s system and the expectations that come with an Inter shirt.
Once Friday’s medical is completed, the formal unveiling at San Siro will follow. Then comes the real work: integrating into a title-chasing dressing room and proving that his World Cup surge was not a one-off burst, but the start of a peak that Inter are paying to own.
